You can try locating the ignition/computer box under the hood and jiggle the wires. I had a freightliner that did that
-
Oh Lord. I hope that never happens to me.
-
mine did this. what it was on mine, was, coming off the batteries is a small wire going to the ECM or something. well, this lenght of wire is about 8' long, so the factory looped it back on itself and zip tied it. after a while it broke inside of one of the loops/bends. try that and see if it helps. I just cut off the extra and crimped on a new end and all was good
blanco Thanks this. -
ECM cable to the positive side of the batteries or ground.
edit: beat by a minute. lol
-
When mine did this it was only a corroded battery cable terminal. Good luck

I agree two small wires going to + and - Battery. Positive one has an inline fuse in it. Battery acid is worse than Magnesium chloride mix them together and bad things happen quick!!!

hi joecol, i have a 1996 fh 16 with a 470, sorry to hear your going through the same thing i am, the things others have done to fix this prob 1.replace fuel pickup pump (the one in the tank) what happens is the fuel line doesnt get adequate fuel into the fuel injector pump, and the ecu thinks its running out so it cuts the motor 2.replace ecu, this is what volvo are telling me, they have put in a loaner ecu, and if the trouble doesnt happen then it must be the ecu $7620 deposit i had to pay for the privilige of using the ecu and $50 per day for hire of the ecu, this is their thinking not mine, 3. the fuse holder sometimes becomes corroded or broken and loses contact sometimes this confuses the ecu and it shuts down, a person responded to me on an australjan volvo forum and told me he replaced the fuel injector
pump and ecu , still had the prob, so he got into it with a fine tooth comb and found the broken fuse holder and hasnt had the prob anymore, good luck hope you find it soon and save me some cash also, cheers joe ,,,regards brett -
hey are you talking about the fuse holder by the battery .i changed a bunch of sensors and the truck started about 20 times with no problems and when i went to take it for a test ride i slammed the hood slightly and it shut off and wouldnt start back up
-
i am talking about every fuse, and holder in the truck , check them all,do you have a sensor for the hood, that tells you if its not closed properly, might be worth looking at, i think you need a very good auto elec,, or take it to volvo and get them to scan your ecu for faults ,,, as far as mine goes,, replaced the ecu seems to go okay no probs with the loan ecu or the new one,
