My freshman year in high school my school bus went off the road kinda like this accident here but we FLIPED over and slid on the roof of the bus until a pole stoped the bus Not so much fun at 7am in the middle of nowhere in Vermont when its -20 out side and tons of snow lol:biggrin_2559:

But I see what your saying, thats my biggest fear out here is something small like slideing off the edge of the road can easily turn your truck over and turn a small accident into a big one...

Look at my trucking photos. Objects in motion have their limits depending on the angle of the slope the big truck is attempting to traverse.

If the median had been soft enough to slow him abruptly, it probably would have rolled on the way in, the change in the velocity vector combined with the change of direction vector is what causes things to tip over. Turn slowly when turning anything in a tippy circumstance

I saw a few on 80 eastbound in PA, those did mostly go over, some rolled completely by the look of them. Same night as the lake effect snow started in Buffalo. I was through there the next afternoon before dark.

I was driving on I-70 tonight and there were still 7-10 trucks left to be towed away, one was so close to the road if someone doesn't hit it, it'll be a miracle, scary situation...It made me extra cautious even though the road looked dry as it was night and I had to go 160+ miles of it...

Perhaps if I had gone into the ditch sideways, but I went almost straight-in, with the tail of the trailer drifting slightly toward the bottom of the ditch.
Got my load off this morning, and none of the bulkheads, padding or dunnage had shifted one bit.
I was worried about that a bit.

Like all them darned billbbob bigriggers I see flying down the road in fog so thick I can't see the handgrip on the edge of my hood, ya? That said, ya did a ###### fine job there, Pur48ted. Kept the dirty side down, and didn't hit anybody else.

One of my biggest pet peeves with how the interstate system is built is in how the states remove all the trees from the median strips and the edges of the highways. If there were nice thick stands of trees to block the wind, sudden whiteouts caused by wind wouldn't occur as often, which would make the highways a bit safer, I think. I live just off I-79 here in Pennsyltucky, and I have noticed that when there are plenty of trees on either side of the lane, the wind doesn't blow as much snow up into my windshield to block my view.

you will never win the case. you now these 8 week wonders that where well for loss of other words trained. the thing they do is slame the brakes on turn on the flashers and jump out in the left lane and run down the road at 10 miles per hour.know it all. i my self try to stay away and run by my self. you did the right thing dont let a few people tell you different.

Its a tactic that's always served me well... but I know how you feel. After awhile with every wheel-holder out here passing you to get into that defensive gap you've set up, it gets real frustrating.

Interesting thread. Glad it was not worse than it was. Your boss was pissed at the tow bill, but it could have been your bill. Chalk one up for the company drivers.

I have been in those situations where the road conditions change quickly. All those griping about you following too close should blow it out their ear. Sounds like you did everything you could and made the best decision.
