it's not just truckstops.
the local kinkos isn't cheap either. and the rate goes higher for a long distance fax. i think it's more then truckstops these days. -
I have an all in one scanner, printer, copier. I scan in gray-scale (250 to 500KB per page) unless color is requested.
Scan everything as I get it, upload it to the cloud, email whats needed, and file the originals (send them to my brother a few times a year). The load booking company deals with the faxing if it's needed, most places will take PDF files now. When someone is sending us a fax the load booking company scans and emails to us.
You can also shrink PDF's that have been sent to you, but they only shrink so much. -
They didn't charge long . Charging was a foolish move . Increasing the number of coffees needed for a free one from 6 to 9 was dumb too .CondoCruiser Thanks this.

What's a fax ? We Trans Flo bills . No charge to the driver and we get a receipt number for verification . Pilots have self serve Trans Flos so you can send it yourself and not be delayed at the fuel desk .
-
You can do trans flo from your truck. I do but only for landstar. More and more brokers are getting dedicated email address for paperwork. Blk & wht is the best fromat for paperwork and sends the easiest.

Trans flo works ok, BUT if you have an operation that requires bills sent asap it is just more efficient to be able to send them from the truck. Just finding a TS, parking, waiting in line for a fax, OR finding a trans flo that's working just eats up a lot of time and adds to a drivers frustration level.

i wouldn't think color would have anything to do with it.
because, aren't black and white also colors?
it's the document itself. -
I normal don't fax, I normal hand drop everything off at my office and let my mother ( she handles mine and my fathers company paper work since we have 2 companies she has a full time job dealing with both....lol) handle it but I was stuck out for a month and need to get my pay in. The point is that these trucks stops like the pilot, J , and the TA to name a few megas don't care about truckers any more. I remember when truckers got free coffee no matter what, fuel or no fuel. Now you have to buy so many to get a freebie. heck for the longest time if you got 50 gallons you got a shower and coffee. now they rip you off on the showers and say its a system issue call corporate, course its normally late by this time and they are closed so you still have to pay cash. as for faxing from my truck, I just don't have the room at this point. At this point it is cheaper for me to pay the faxing now and than. instead of giving up my other money savers. Like right now I have a full dorm fridge/freezer combo, stove, pots pans coffee maker. 3 shelfs of food. porta shower table chairs and other things so that I can eat in the truck for every meal instead of spending money on a hot meal in the truck stop. With me and my wife running a stop for a hot meal runs an easy 20 bucks. So yea its a great idea but just not working for me at this time. Its has been in my idea book for a while and if or should I say when I get my big bunk truck which is planned for later this year I would use it....I just hate these profit hungry truck stops. since fuel shot up and we paid for fuel still they have jacked pricing up on everything knowing truckers will still pay....I have gotten so bad that I will fight to get into a wally world or kmart or some other store first. I just park walk in ask for a manager and explain that I am shopping for supplies and that my rig is parked outside and ask if this is ok. So far all has been well. I did have to fax in some papers one day for my truck reg and walmart was nice enough to fax it for free...

It has to do with file size.
Color will be your largest file sizes, then gray scale then B&W.
There are some bills printed on old style dot matrix printers that are REALLY faint when scanned B&W and need to be done either gray scale or color to be legible when scanned. Even a fax would struggle with them.
