I keep looking at that picture, I have been to the Salt Lake airport many times.....I do not understand how a driver could even make this mistake, there is a lane right next to this that goes ALL the way around the parking lots.....:biggrin_2555: ( with plenty of clearance Clarence)

Not to mention the big yellow 10'5" clearance sign. I'm sure the same sign was in the trucker's lane as well, but it's currently being crushed by the top of his trailer.

What I do is look for rest stops on the interstate. They aren't full most times & easy access to a bathroom.

LOL ... They had to "deflate the tires" to get him out ... I guess his 11 was up! That or it was his first day and he saw a parking sign and said "I'll just go inside right quick and get a bite..." WHAM!!!!!!!

    How....why........good Lord!

As per the OP, with experience comes knowledge. Like, for instance, you can find parking at all hours in the DFW area at the TA in Terrell or Petro in Weatherford. Don't bother with the stops inside Dallas. The J, Pilot and Love's never empty out and the TA and the two lther independents charge. If you're on 30 in Texas, the truck parking areas at the 110EB and 112WB offer spots when all the truckstops and rest areas on 30 are full.

everyone is different, its going to depend on how you drive, times mostly. I tend to like to drive early, 5-6am which means even if I ran a 10 hr day thats 4-5pm, most areas are pretty much still have parking available. now of course, those are days that Im just driving straight, which hasnt happened in a while with the new job, that was back with reefer when i ran for days before getting to my cosg. each situation is different, how many hours have you driven, how many do you have left, when do you have to be there, when CAN you be there... I personally do not like driving late in the evening, I just start getting tired but of course I dont always get that luxury. If I know im going to be late I dont even look for a truck stop, I head to rest areas. where you are in the country will also determine where you can find parking, east coast is notorious for getting full earlier in the day, if you are even in an area that has a truck stop/rest area. Its all part of your planning, you should know all of this the night before, at least. You dont want to find yourself at the last minute looking for somewhere to stop and not know whats around and what options you have. When I first started I would pick 2-3 truck stops and then have rest areas as back ups, so when I got on the road I knew where I was planning to stop that night. I wrote everything down on a yellow sticky, including my routing and fuel stops, and put it on the corner of my windshield lol. Now im with a different company running regional and I pretty much know how far I need to get, where the truck stops are, and having terminals/dropyards in the area takes all the guess work out of it.

You will keep hearing the word trip plan. Things will happen and things will change, but always have a plan. Buy a truckstop guide and pick one that you will get to with about an hour left of driving. If you are on a major interstate..then the majority of the time there will be several others you can pick from if the one you choose is full. The longer you drive the more familiar you will become with areas that you can find parking at al areas of the night and those you can't find parking at 2pm.
