Truck almost stolen. Its time to get serious about truck security!
O.K. Yesterday was a wake up call for me. My truck was parked at a local shop, and someone got into their yard, I can’t believe how easy it was for them to get into my truck. According to the police, they simply used a flat screw driver, drove it into the lock assembly on my driver door of my 1998 Kw W900 which I have invested a great deal of time and money bringing back to life. Fortuately they heard the police coming and ran. But I can’t believe how easy it was for them. The officer told me they can get into a truck like that in under 30 seconds, pull the ignition switch in about 2 minutes and be off with the truck in less than 3 three minutes or as soon as it has air for the brakes.
So I have been looking at various was to secure my truck. I can’t find anything for hardening, or improving the lock, so I have given up on securing the cab.
I have found several products for locking out the Air control valves on the dash. But I though it might be good to start a tread which would allow others to tell their story here, and to recommend, or de-recommend a product, not just for the tractor, but also the trailer.
With the increase in crime, and the mass influx of illegal aliens into our country, the insurance company told me they are seeing a huge increase in stolen trucks. And many end up in Mexico becoming parts trucks.
    Any comments would be appreciated.
I am looking at the “War Lock” system for my air valves, but it looks like it might be easy to bypass?

    Hide an ignition lockout switch.

I had LoJack installed in mine. They might still get it if they get past the dog, but it will be found in fairly short order, probably while still in their possession. Not that the courts care: Guilty! Time served! Next!

    First...

How do you know they were trying to steal the truck? They could have just been looking for valuables inside. stereo. CB. GPS. spare money. tools.

    Second...

You can't stop a theif. If they want it bad enough, they are going to get it regardless of what you do to stop it.

I got some tips for ya.....

#1 get Air Cuffs for your Brake Knobs (only thing they can do is pry it off which will rip your air valves off which now means they need to replace them before they can leave)

#2 Wire a Start switch (when my dad worked for Stevens Transport on ALL of there trucks you had to have the Clutch in, transmission in neutral, and the key in the start position, then to actully start the truck you had to push the Headlight Interupt Switch) so if you didnt know what button to press the truck wouldnt start....

#3 Get one of those steering wheel bar things.....i forget what there called....

#4 Put a simple car alarm on it...

My company's had a rash of truck thefts in the (very!) recent past. I was just put in a new truck so I'm extra-wary of stuff like that, especially when I make runs to south Texas (where a lot of our thefts have happened). I already use a kingpin lock on the trailer whenever I have to bobtail (and know I'm returning later), but the aircuff locks seem like a really good idea; as one poster already said, they would have to screw up their getaway to get them off.

Speaking of trailers, I learned to start padlocking my doors even if the box is empty, especially along the I-10 corridor. One of our drivers was apprehended by Border Patrol not too long ago when they caught him with 3 illegal migrants hiding in the air foil on top of his cab!!! (he had nothing to do with it, they sneaked up there when he wasn't looking - but he may have caught them if he'd done his pre-trip). They eventually figured things out after they had him locked up for 24 hours, but that incident got me thinking about how easy it would be for a migrant to sneak inside an unsealed trailer while I was at a rest area or truck stop. Plus, Texas, Florida and New Jersey are notorious for cargo theft, so I try not to take any chances if possible.

While your paranoid & thinking about it...

Think about this. How is that illegal alien (call them what they are... forget this PC crap) going to sneak into your empty trailer & then close & latch the doors?
