The amish pay federal and state taxes, they are exempt from social security and medicare because they help each other out in hospital bills when needed. One of the kids takes over the farm and takes care of the parents when they retire. I'm defending them because one of you said they don't pay taxes, 'which is not true' just don't get me started on there religion which is, well................:biggrin_25512:

I used to pick up in Salem, In all the time.

One day I noticed horse poop on the road. A month later it had deteriorated the pavement. Where each dropping had been, there was a hole in the asphalt. I don't know what the Amish feed their horses, but I know it's really powerful stuff.

I don't respect the Amish, they need to get out of the 19th century and stop making the roads dangerous for the rest of us. I do feel bad for the horses though. It's pretty amazing how well they do with cars and trucks buzzing by. One time there was a hayrack with 5 children, no adults, looked like they were going to pick up hay bales. The kids were giving me the arm pull airhorn signal. I guess they had confidence in their pair of horses but it still didn't seem like a good idea to me. I mean to blow my horn, prolly not a good idea for a bunch of kids to be working without supervision either but whatever.

I use to deliver to Amish, he would have me get there early because he didn't want his neighbors to see that he had a forklift. I think the cell I called him on was secret too. Funny, he had a cell and forklift but rode a bicycle. It's just a stupid bunch of ridiculous rules to me, again, no respect from me, lol.

Agreed and many of the teenagers want out.

There are 12 sects near me. It's ridiculous.

Say what you will about the Amish, they're all around where I live. I've never had an issue with them. And they are the best cabinetmakers you'll find

Each family pays its own hospital bills and if its to much for them to handle the church will get donations together from there members and also ask other Amish churches for help. Some of them have a system set up where each family pays a certain amount each month, kinda like an insurance thing. I was reading thru part of the healthcare act where I saw they were except because they're classed as a nonprofit religious group or something like that.
