    I have a Freightliner 2002 Columbia Detroit Engine 12.7,
For a while the ABS light has been on and finally the truck would not go into neutral, therefore i could not move it. The truck turns on and everything, but it wont show any gears on the dash. I know that it is in neutral, but the system wont recognize it or anything on the dash. Next, this small black box in the chases near the gas tanks melted, [IMG] [IMG] . Before, it would run fine for a while and then start jerking and stop. Apparently it is not the speed sensor. I've taken it to multiple mechanics and electricians, no one can help. What could possibly make my truck malfunction like this?

I drive a T680 with an auto transmission. Last winter we were in the middle of Wyndmoaning (Wyoming) and while driving the truck stayed in 7th and wouldnt change, even in manual mode. I pulled off, it went to neutral, and there we stayed until we were towed into Cheyenne. It took about an hour to fix and was very cheap. What happened? One of the wires broke........just one wire. Shut down the entire truck.

You can try to find the issue, but I sugggest, unless you really know what you are doing, take it to the shop and have them look it over. You may be lucky like we were and it be a simple fix.

the small box on the chassis should be your power distribution module and needs to be replaced that might have a lot to do with it as well

    ABS.

    Anti lock braking system.

I do not understand where shifting comes into play? Unless it is one computer dealing with two paths of binary channels for two seperate systems on the 18 wheeler itself. One for transmission and other for anti lock braking?

Do I have that right? Or did I totally blow smoke and should be taken out to the woodpile to be shot tonight?

usually the communication for the data link goes thru abs some of the time depends on the truck most frl are like that and they are just a pain in the ###.

Has to be, the way he describes it. Just another reason to have a manual transmission.
