Take the starter off 1/2 hr job and just get it tested they'll be able to tell you if it's good or not, at least you'll know.At no charge.

I have never worked on a Volvo of that vintage, but judging from your video the tach is run off the datalink. If you watch your odometer, it disappears as you crank. With that being said, what your tach is showing is not true indication of engine RPM. When cranking, datalink traffic stops and you can't monitor live data. Cat has harness that allows you to connect directly to ECM to monitor RPM and other parameters while cranking. If ECM doesn't synchronize engine position and RPM, it will never command injectors to fire. Noid light would a good way to see if injectors are being commanded to fire.
Most starting fluid is garbage these days, John Deere still has some decent stuff so whatever your spraying may be good or bad. Pull intake ducting off turbo and exhaust piping off turbo and give it some ether while cranking. If it's making to the cylinders you will smell it out the exhaust.Last edited: Mar 17, 2020

That starter sounds like it’s on it’s way out, if not already shot. Worth the money. Yesterday my neibors Ruvmck wouldn’t Start. Found bad wire on selinoid. Road service came out, diagnosed starter. Quote $1400 w/ towing. Today his Friend a Mechanic, found a bad ground in frame. Price to fix, $0
Gix1k, lwlevens, lester and 1 other person Thank this. -
If the starter doesn’t get replaced tomorrow I think you should go ahead with the rebuild.
Rideandrepair and lwlevens Thank this. -
He can take and get it tested at no charge.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Ok...so if it doesn’t get tested or replaced tomorrow then a full rebuild should be in order.
If I am going through the trouble of pulling the starter out then I am replacing it.
I still am confused why the starter was even ruled out?Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Rideandrepair and TTNJ Thank this.

I have that long nose Pete and it was a pain, they put one bolt on between the starter and the block and it ain’t easy to get to.....
Rideandrepair and lester Thank this. -
Mine on my 60 series took about 1/2 hr. I'm saying to test it if he wants to save some money, since he hasn't made any money with the truck yet.
Rideandrepair and Gix1k Thank this.
