So you spray the ether in before you attempt to start it? I was spraying while it was turning and it vapor locked. This happened twice.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Yes, it only had three batteries in it. There was a spot for a 4th and a place on the connector harness for it. I am going to charge again tonight and will remove positive.

I'd go easy with that ether #### maybe use WD 40. I also think your sucking in a lot of air from that bad primer pump. Replace the pump first then try without using ether.
Gix1k and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
No you’re right, either way, I usually squirt if good first, see if it catches, but have to spray more, to keep it going good. Vapor locked, too much, I’ve done that too. We even did it on my fresh rebuild, to get it started. Talk about being nervous. Could have primed it and all, but much quicker, to just cringe and spray it up, Lol. As far as putting wear on my new engine, rings still need to seat in, that takes up to 70 k miles. I don’t think it hurt it a bit. Usually what makes it crank slow, are low batteries, corroded cables to starter, might be corroded all inside, can’t see it, or a bad starter dragging, or draining batteries while sitting. Those primer pumps are notoriouse for sucking air. So much, when I had my Cat. I was told not to use it, unless I had to.I always shut off filters and refill the new ones.Last edited: Mar 4, 2020

I am not familiar with that engine but in the volvo there is a banjo bolt right before fuel goes into the head, do you have access to something like that in your engine? That way you can see iy you are getting fuel at the head, might get messy if you have to pump u til getting rid of the air but if you can do it I would try that before using ether ir wd.

Replace the primer pump. Then find the line from the back of the head and follow it, I think it goes back the the primer or somewhere close. Loosen it up and pump the primer until you get a good flow of fuel and no air. Tighten the line back up and pump until you get good pressure. Should fire right up then. That's the process I do any time I remove the cylinder head and it fires right up. Leave your battery charger on a low 12volt setting and let it run all night or day. Takes a while to get a good charge in those big batteries. Running it on low is easier on your batteries. You can use the high setting when trying to start it.
Depending what kind of either you are using, some is way stronger than others. John Deere has the best and strongest. The generic stuff from the auto parts store is pretty weak.
But if you feel you need to use it. Pull the air filter out and have some one turn it over while you spray a couple short blasts in it. Just a second or two is plenty. I've seen guys spray something like WD-40 while also spraying either too. If it starts to fire but isn't quite taking off you can give it a few more blasts to see if it will take off and run in it's ownGix1k and spsauerland Thank this. -
