i understand how you feel. But route planning is part of the job. One of our guys got fined $69000 for going off route. The thing that's unfair is that fines can be more than the average driver makes in a year, but the department of labor classifies trucking as unskilled labor. $69000 fines to an unskilled laborer? Unreal, right?

Theres a lot of people that get into trucking that think all they have to do is get a CDL and hold a steering wheel and you will get respect and make a good living. Yes, you can make a living, but everyone is out to get you. The better you do your homework, the more you learn, the more capable you become as a driver. And don't look to big brother to be just...they view you as a necessary evil.

I used to work at Combined Transport, in the ComplianceDepartment. We had a HH driver get hitwith $35,000 for driving out of route with a permitted load. I tried to fight the ticket for him and gotit reduced to $8,000. The fines for outof route are way too high.

It's extortion. Pure and simple. Borderline theft... DOT officials who uphold crap like this should be jailed for extortion. A fine may be in order, but this is unreal, for a mistake. Exactly why I want to hang up the keys.

how many times have you driven to a location, NO NAME, NO ADDRESS, you kinda figure its the place, but you arent sure. Your natural instinct is not to slow traffic down to a crawl as you approach the place.

Then as soon as you are 5' past the place, there is an obscure sign or something telling you THIS IS THE PLACE. But now you are on some backroad in PA or small street in connecticut, or bouncing around Front Royal, or even worse........anywhere in ILLINOIS. You cant back up. So you are now looking for somewhere to turn this truck around.

HONEST mistake, it happens to many of us. But after you past the place, the entire landscape is littered with "no trucks" "weight limit 2,000lbs gvw", i am sure you get the picture

an honest mistake should not cost anyone a years salary. It shouldnt even cost a week's salary. Cruel and unusual punishment? I vote yes

you could trip plan till the cows come home, these mistakes happen

Probably not $17000 for every overweight truck that has ever crossed the bridge, fined or not.

Is there nothing down this road? There must be, or there wouldn't be a road. Farms? Houses? Do they get trash service? Appliance deliveries? If the cop car breaks down back there will they have a second thought about sending a 10 ton wrecker over the bridge? Sounds like its time to upgrade the bridge (IE the government's job- serving the public- not being tyrannical)

The driver crossed a bridge that he had no business being on. The weight limit is what it is for a reason. The structural integrity of the bridge can not handle that much weight continually. I'm sure someone came out to inspect the bridge afterwards too. Do I think the fine is high? Maybe, but don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine. Just think how much that trucking company and city would have to pay if the bridge collapsed as he was crossing or the next morning with a school bus on it.

Stupid is as stupid does and stupid pays stupid fines. Lol

There is a big difference between an OTR truck being on a "no trucks" road and a local delivery driver. I delivered propane for 7 years and used to go down roads with a 5 or 10 ton limit, never got hassled. But I'm sure if I tried that with my current truck, someone would be on the horn in an instant. I turned the wrong way out of a Walmart DC this morning, saw the no trucks sign and started to slow down to figure out "Plan B" and here comes a local in his pick-up pointing the other direction. I was like, I know dude...gimme a second. Ended up just backing up because there wasn't any traffic.

SOUTH MIDDLETON TOWNSHIP - The driver of a tractor trailer was fined more than $17,000 after it was discovered the truck he was driving was overweight. Wayne Warren Young, 44, Chicago, Ill., was issued a citation and fined $17,606 for exceeding bridge weight, according to Pennsylvania State Police, Carlisle.
Police were dispatched to Zion Road at its intersection with Pa. 74 at 12:29 a.m. Saturday for the report of a tractor trailer traveling on a weight restricted bridge, police said.
Upon arrival, the tractor trailer had traveled across the bridge and became stuck on a private road, police said.
The truck was unable to maneuver back onto the highway and Johns Mobile was contacted to assist the truck, police said.
The truck was weighed and inspect and found to be exceeding the permitted bridge weight by 60,000 pounds, police said.

Looks like he should have tried to turn around before he crossed a bridge with a 5 ton limit(guessing).
