New York bridges aren't signed at the real height. That's why a 13'6 will clear the 12'2 Brooklyn Bridge overpass on the BQE. It's about 18" off. In NY, if you see a yellow 12'6 or higher sign, you can fit without an issue. If it's a white sign, that's ACTUAL HEIGHT (and usually states that on the sign).
Anyways, any company worth their salt will tell drivers that in the NE, do not drive on Parkways. Only expressways. And for him, there is a lot of signage warning both not to enter the parkways on Long Island, and the heights of the bridges on approach.
This is definitely a 'GPS routed me there' issue. -
The yellow and white signs say the same height... they're considered "legal clearance heights," and depending on the town, the cops will write you up for running under them. "Actual clearance" signs are green with white lettering.
Studebaker Hawk Thanks this. -
Well, at least we know what happened to that USA Truck driver who couldn't make a u-turn! He went and became an O/O!!!

They have big "NO TRUCKS" signs all over the parkway... Shows what kind of idiots are out here these days...

NY is getting ready to add height dectors with flashing messages and if you fail to ignore them, it'll have ability to notify Highway patrol.

I thought I had heard too that the actual height on the rest of the bridges was actually higher because of snow clearance being added to it, but I wouldn't want to check that out. Husband had been under a 13'5" in Teagarden, NJ one time.
