Well, I've been looking into some truck driving schools considering getting my CDL and becoming a truck driver. I know lots of companies claim they have "Great hometime", but I also understand they lie sometimes. I'm mainly concerned about doing this for the money and the time frame in which I can start making money, I'm tired of being broke and I have a son and wife I need to provide for. I was just wondering what companies are good for rookies to start based on pay/hometime/how they treat drivers etc. and also, what is it really like out there, I know it's gonna come down to a different strokes for different folks kind of thing on this but just looking for opinions from people already in the industry. Thanks

Also, two more things I just thought of. If you know what kind of schedules companies offer could you please provide that info that would be great and also, your opinion on whether I should go to a 3rd party school or just find a company I think I would like working for and go to their personalized training. Thanks once again

Put your location in your profile, it will show up when you post and with questions like this it helps the members determine what might best suit you.
luvtotruck, CHill0922 and Squad27 Thank this. -
Not sure what you are asking for about schedules.
Go to a 3rd party school, then you are not tied to a carrier if things don't work out.tow614, CHill0922 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Check out my post about 7 on 7 off, it may be helpful.
CHill0922 Thanks this. -
Right on, I updated my info and @Squad27 I read over it definitely some good stuff from folks on there my biggest concern with a schedule with that much off time am I gonna make enough money to support my family? That's my biggest thing is am I gonna be able to make this a good thing for all parties involved?? I wanna be a good employee and make the company more money (which is what they want too lol), but I also wanna make sure they pay good and I can finally not be stressed out about how am I gonna pay this bill, how am I gonna get clothes for my son and all that ya know just looking for some freedom in my life financially anyway
Chinatown Thanks this. -
I commend your desire to work and provide for your family. If you can afford to pay for a third party school by all means do so. Although some companies who have their own schools give a big discount if you pay upfront. Most companies out here do have a tuition reimbersment program.
Since you live in Georgia you may want to look at US Express in Chattanooga. They used to have a school even. I went to Covenants school in 2002 but they no longer have it and i would not recommend driving for them either. Like most of us you will go thru a couple companies before you find one that you are happy with. Just hang in there especially the first year..good luckblairandgretchen and CHill0922 Thank this. -
GA has the Hope Grant that pays for CDL school; the money comes from lottery proceeds.
You can make real good money in hazmat/tanker, food service, or flatbed. US Food Service is good company and there are others on Careerbuilder and Indeed websites.
Get all the endorsements and TWIC for more opportunities. Start studying the "CDL Practice Tests" at the top of this page. Here are some companies that hire new CDL grads with good pay and benefits:
US Food Service
Superior-Carriers
CTL (Comcar website)
Melton Truck Lines (best family healthcare benefits in the industry)
Maverick (weekends home program)
McElroy (weekends home program-don't know how good the weekly pay is. The other companies listed should be able to make a grand a week)
Benny Whitehead Trucking (Eufaula, AL - Teams doing West Coast turns back to Southeast & Florida. Don't know how their hometime works.)
Well, there's a few you can research on their websites. None of these have their own CDL school, but do hire new CDL grads.CHill0922 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Thanks for all the helpful info everyone. I am looking at one third party school they are called CDI and they have a branch about 20 minutes away from my house and they are supposed to have good connections in the industry and have job placement assistance and they said the tuition is around 6k but all I have to pay out of pocket at 1st is $215 and then if I get in with a company who does reimbursement they will take care of that. They have a good list of companies they work with on a regular basis I saw on their site they work with Werner, Schneider, CRST and some more those are just the ones I remember right off. Just wanting to make the best decision even though I know there is a strong possibility the first year or so may not be the greatest trying to make the best of it lol. I'll look into the companies you spoke of @chinatown thanks again folks

I'm new to all this myself, but from what research I've done, home time when you're first starting out doesn't seem too good with most companies, from what I've gathered. Unless you're lucky enough to get on with a co. that offers you regional or dedicated routes right from the start, but I think those positions are a lot fewer & further between. At least for a new hire. I might be wrong though.
