AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol said late Saturday that one person is dead after a bad crash at Highway 30 and Interstate 35 near Ames.
Three cars ran into each other and created a chain reaction that eventually sent a service truck over the I-35 South bridge. The truck landed on the westbound lanes of traffic on Highway 30.
The driver of the boom truck was killed. The crash shut down part of Highway 30 but it has since reopened. State Troopers are still investigating the cause. -
New York man killed in crash near Ames
Register Staff Reports April 12, 2009
According to authorities, the Saturday evening crash that killed Gary Parsons, 51, of Deposit, N.Y., started when Garrett Michael Chitty, 17, of Ames, was merging into a southbound lane of Interstate 35 from westbound U.S. Highway 30. As Chitty attempted to merge, his 2007 Nissan Armada struck a semi-tractor trailer driven by Lewis Thomas, 56, of Cleveland, Ohio.
Thomas' trailer then slammed into Parsons' utility truck and sent it barreling through a guardrail on the overpass. The utility truck rolled down an embankment before coming to rest on a guardrail near the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 30.
The crash happened at 4:15 p.m. and neither Chitty nor Thomas were injured, authorities said.
Parsons was taken by ambulance to the state medical examiner.
Authorities said there is an ongoing investigation and that no charges have been filed at this time.
The Iowa State Patrol, Ames Police, Ames Fire and Story Country Sheriff's Office responded to the crash.Last edited: Apr 12, 2009
