Trucker subculture: is this possible?

If you look at that definition, OTR truckers fit right in. Their "residence" sets them apart from the rest folks out there. They live a life that most people could not or would not.

 

Its interesting how certain words can be so misleading. Growing up overseas I learned to choose words by how they may sound and avoid others that may be misconstrued, though perfectly appropriate. Another cultural thing.

 

I can sort of understand what you are looking for. I don't think the word "sub culture" exactly fits or doesn't fit. Then again I don't make a big deal about it. I think this country is always striving to be to "politically correct". Perhaps you are looking at certain "attributes" associated with a particular lifestyle that sets them apart from the mainstream. You are correct, many groups have certain
internal communication and lifestyle behaviors that are common to them and that someone outside of that particular group would not understand. For example, drivers will flash lights on their trucks to let another driver know they can come over (at least they used to)
when some kids move their arms up and down we know they want us to blow the air horn. Bikers will show two fingers when riding by each other as a sign of mutual understanding. As you also stated many groups have their own internal "language" i.e. CB radio communications that someone outside of the group would not know the meaning of. I hope this helps you. I personally wasn't offended by "subculture". I don't think it was the exact "politically correct" term, but I think I got your drift. I always say you can call me anything, just don't call me late for supper!

try the truckstops just take it easy alot of drivers tend to get upset by outsiders. But if you explain yourself you should get some good material. As for a ride along you just have to find the right person and have the time on your hands to get out here and experience it for yourself. If you really want to understand the way life on the road spent sometime doing some of the things we do. Try lumping a load with a driver or find a flatbed and help them roll tarps.. there is alot more to the job than just driving!
