Trucking is a great way to see the country. In my first year I rolled 120k miles, home 3 out of 4 weekends/mth, swam in all 5 great lakes and many other beaches, skiied Breckenridge, Aspen, Mt SteAnne, visited relatives in Sacramento, spent US thanksgiving in Flagstaff with a rented car, been to more casinos than I can remember, sailed off Baltimore, Quebec City, and Chicago with sailing forum buddies, spent a couple days at Wis Dell, got a ride on Lake Travis in a forum buddies Donzi(then gave him and his wife a ride to Albuquerque in the truck), hiked in Yellowstone&Superior Provincial Park. When ever possible I jump off the Interstate and run the state highways. I haul a lot of permit loads and my gross for the year works out to 54cpm for all miles in a company ride. I should be able to do better in my second year.
Have fun, have a plan and have a coloring book.

If you really want to see the US- get a car GPS!! LOL

Thanks for responding. Is that to say that the qualcom or truck gps wont show you the finer points of life as you cruise? lol. sounds like you've been living the dream. and wow .54cpm, I wanna work with your company, even if I have to defect - lol. seriously, who do you drive for (or did you drive for)?

Well just to be honest trucking is tiring and grueling work. Once you're dispatched on a trip you will have just enough time to run the miles, sleep the bare minmum, and if you're lucky shower. Going off the beaten path won't happen, there just isn't any time. Plus if you go to anyone of the generic dry van companies you'll most likely be running between sh*tty places like Kansas City, Des Moines, or Nashville. Yuck. If you want to go to more exotic places like Miami or Los Angeles go to a produce hauler. They usually run to the warms areas. All my layovers have been by accident but some have been:

    1) Bradenton Florida from 4 PM until 8 AM the next day. Got a nice hotel room and bobtailed to the Carraba's for a good Italian dinner.

    2) Sanford Florida for 3 days. Sitting poolside even took the bobtail to the beach for a few hours. Got there on Friday and didn't have to drop the load until Monday.

    3) McAllen Texas again pool and relaxation for 48 hours waiting for a load.

    4) Most recently was Yuma AZ for 48 hours. It wasn't that fun since the shipper kept jerking me around and spent the time at the truck stop.

It can happen sometimes but you can forget about it being on your whim. Unless you buy your own truck, own authority, and dispatch yourself.

    Right on!!!
wheels4realz- You saw the permit part before the cpm?
A car GPS does not have any regard for what you are driving It could easily direct you to run thru the nearest new school yard or down a road that has been closed by a hydro electric dam... you certainly will see more than someone on a proper truck route.
Most of my trips can be done in 4.5 to 5 days. If I take an extra day it isnt a problem for my boss.

I can't think of the brand, but the one I bought, which is a 7 speed road bike, was about $400. So yes, they are pricey, but compared to constantly replacing an outside bike every time the gears rust off, it's not that bad a deal.

Where are the most truck friendly poker rooms you've been to? I like to play Omaha hi/Lo.

You can plan your hometime at any tourest attrraction, friends home or wherever.Just because it says hometime does not mean you have to go home to take time off.Just give your dispatcher a couple weeks notice.Far as a reset goes, not very likely unless they find you a load going that way.It can be safe leaving the rig at a trkstop depending on the trk stop.I would suggest buying yourself glad hand locks and a sturdy padlock for the back of the trl and maybe a lock cap for your fuel but find a quiet clean trk stop and make sure you get approval from your company.I have never took a brief getaway but what better way to do it then while trucking.

I've visited about a dozen casinos all over the US. A lot of them offer truck parking, some are within walking distance to truck stops. In Vegas, a lot of casinos are within a short walk from the Wild West truck stop off of Tropicana. If you travel I-8 in California, there's a casino that's a little tucked away in Aspen, CA that has a nice poker room. There's also the Quapaw casino at the OK/MO state line on 44 that has truck parking. Harrah's in Kansas City has a few truck spots. Route 66 casino outside Albuquerque on 40 has a truck stop next door that they own. Choctaw in Durant, OK has a truck stop across the street.

Those are just a few I can think of off the top of my head that I've actually been to.
