I know the VA definitely offers something last time I was dropping a patient off I saw that they offer free CDL training to Vets and I am sure they can do something with placement even if you have to drive for the VA itself doing shuttle/bus runs. It's not OTR but it's something if they have that sort of thing at the VA you go to.

I usually find this information in the Firm A/Firm B clinics, in the elevators or hallways.

I tried finding some information for you all I got is this VetSuccess:

    https://va-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?signin_tab=0&js_disabled=0

Also this if say you wanted to start your own trucking business or any other kind of business after you've gotten some time driving...:

Hope you get your CDL, and Thank you for your service!

OK C.R. England turned me down today, talked to the labor department about WIA and now I have a new mission. I need to find 3 companies that will give me a letter saying if I had my CDL they would offer me a job with the job title and on company letterhead.

So my question is anyone know any companies that have a history for hiring just about any warm body with a CDL. The program I would be attending would include CDL A, tanker and hazmat endorsements. I don't know if this make a difference but would hope that with the extra endorsements there would be more willing to work with me.

Any company suggestions would be great, I live in New Mexico so someone with a terminal or office there would be preferred but would take anyone who is willing to give me the letter.

Thanks in advance for any leads.

O'Boy,doesn't sound to good for your end:biggrin_25511:I would keep calling every trucking company you can find not only ones that provide training because you may call a smaller trucking company and they may give you a change.I would keep searching, someone out there gotta give you a brake.

Actually I thought that was a positive thing if I can get the 3 letters then I stand a chance of having the state pay for my CDL A with hazmat and tanker. At this point I'm going to put my effort into finding 3 companies who will give me the letter I've exhausted 7 different training companies already so hoping this will work out.

If it works then I'm golden because I won't have to pay for the class, its 5 weeks and at the end should have everything I need to start with a company that takes new drivers.

Try your local community college that offers federal financial aid like pell grants and student loans! Also call stevens transport or local companies in or around your area! Also call your local military vets organization in your area they may be able to help!

If you are looking to get a grant through WIA, you may want to try to get a link card. I'm not sure about NM, but in Illinois the IDES (unemployment division) accepts grant applications under two circumstances:

-If you are unemployed and receiving unemployment benefits

    or

-If you have a link card/are on the food stamp program

Since you apparently aren't receiving unemployment, I would check with your local unemployment office to see if they issue CDL school grants to individuals active in the food stamp program. It may take some time to get all of this figured out, but it may be worth it getting free school training and then not being committed to a contract with a carrier that pays your tuition up front and then holds you to a contract in the process where you have to spend 18 months or so with them.

Other than that, if you can find a place that will offer schooling upfront with contract commitment that would be the second best way IMO.

Not to burst your bubble but all the endorsements usually come with a CDL. The hazmat can almost be a requirement for many companies. The doubles, triples and tanker won't take your very far without some OTR experience.

Your job history is what will cause the most trouble with getting hired. It isn't training it affects, it's hiring. Your location is not a plus either. I'm not saying give up, I would never do that or suggest it to anyone.

You didn't address my earlier post with regard to your criminal record and driving record. This is your business, if they are clean your chances increase.

I also spoke about the missing three years. I respect what you did with your Grandma, but to a trucking company they are missing years. IMHO, you won't find three companies, in the US, that will hire you until you put together the documentation to cover this time. Like I said before, proof of what you were doing and proof of how you supported yourself while doing it.

What you have now is a great way to get training that won't require indentured servitude. It does not change anything we have told you with respect to hiring requirements. Your residence state is a strike that isn't going away. Figure out how to reduce the strikes (job history) and your chances go up.

    Good luck.
