I 've been with the same company for 25 years and now they get it in thier head you have to cover Saturday loads or they will cover it and charge it back and take it off my statement. They said it is the run I am on and that is that. Bunch of crap. Nothing like seniority ,O/O don't have any.

IMHO, EVERYONE is a truckers worst enemy. Weather it's the companies, DOT customers, or the public it doesnt matter. Drivers are treated as a easy replaceable expendable commodity. I don't care who you are or where you work but you can be replaced and everyone knows it. No one really cares and won't lose a wink if you lose your job.

It may not be honorable but business never is. The easiest way to be successful now-a-days is to be just as cut throat as everyone else. Companies will continue to haul freight for pocket change because, if they don't someone else will. The DOT will continue to hold drivers responsible for things out of their control, because of the good ol' passing the buck system. Customers will continue to treat drivers and companies like crap because they know, we need them much more then they need us. The public will inevitability continue to #####, moan, pass the buck, and treat us like crap.

Talk of giant truckers strikes and shut downs is just that,... talk. Keep working and be thankful because if you don't someone else will, period.

same here. 30 years in this business. dock, lumper, driver, p/d, warehouse
and theres never any answer to the question about the industry.
as for the strike/shutdown - we had them. but the trucks just rolled on by.
we blocked the fuel islands, they got injunctions

but did we ever get one second of airtime on the news to voice our concern ?

    no

Maybe they should hang on to it so that they don't get the seat wet.

On a serious note, Carriers have the American Trucking Association that represent them and lobby governments on their behalf. They get things accomplished and know that drivers will do anything they're asked because they don't have representation to act on their behalf.

The word UNION seems to be a swear word.

In my book, UNION IS a swear word. Unions have long since outlived their usefulness. Back in the day, when people were working stupid hours for stupid money, getting hurt on the job, no benefits, etc, unions came in and saved the day.

Now, all they do is drive up the price of retail goods, spoil workers, and force companies out of business or into farming out jobs overseas. We can see what labor unions did to the Big 3 in the car business... funny how non-union car factories in Southern states are doing great. The only difference is union involvement.

That said, I'd like to see a driver's organization come to the forefront and have some clout and horsepower to lobby for working conditions, pay, rest areas, shipper cooperation... all the things we need to make a living easier that it's happening now.
