I wonder where the OP got their statistics. According to the federal govt, in an article on page 4 of the Feb Truckers News, in 2010, 33,000 people where killed, and 2 million injured nationwide. While many, myself included, would say that is too many, it is a far lower number than a million killed per year quoted in his post. That million a year must have been referring to numbers globally. As far as the vehicles "seeing everything, and reacting at once", you don't have to drive a truck equipped with VEX (Volvo Enhanced Cruisecontrol), or Eaton Vorad radar systems to see how poor that technology is. As for half the freight going by rail, the railroads will have to do a lot of track laying and railcar building soon for that to happen. I hear news articles pretty regularly about grain sitting because of the insufficient capacity of the rail industry.

Yeah, I think they will always have to have a human on board for the stuff a computer just can't do. But what kind of scares me, is that no computer is better than how it is programed. And do we really want to see the time when computers program themselves?
LaBubba, LSAgentOZR, SuperLiner and 1 other person Thank this. -
LaBubba Thanks this.

1 million a year killed globaly. Yes there are pilots in 747's that don't really do much except monitor the plane and do things like Sully Sullenberger did on the Hudson. The only reason there were astronauts on the moon was for a photo op. That thing could have flown itself and it could have done a better job, but no one wanted to see that. There are aerial drones, traffic cameras, automatic vacuum cleaners, and numerous wild and wacky robots being dreamed up in Japan everyday.
One of them looks and sounds like Elvis Presley. It's creepy. The fact is that robots are a thing of the future and they will do everything better, cheaper, and with less loss of time and life. Imagine never driving in rush hour traffic again or worrying about getting into a car accident. Sure accidents will still happen, but the human error is removed which causes most of the accidents. It will be a time where you could go to a bar and have a few beers and then have your own personal driver drive you home if you want. It is going to happen and it wont take decades. The technology is all that we have been waiting for and it is progressing at light speed now.
You know you want to have a driverless semi. No more log violations, speeding violations, no more paycheck. Come on! 2 out of three aint bad! -
