That almost sounds like it could be something lucrative.. Not really for someone that hasn't been around the industry for a while, but for a computer savy Retired O/O at least.. From what I have read on these boards I am under the impression that a "decent broker" is pretty much like a Unicorn or a Leprechauns pot of gold
Yeh!!!! Right!!!! How's that wokin out for ya? LOL Thers no such thing as "Good Paying Frieght" anymore.... unless your very specialized...
Yes it would be very lucrative especially for a former OO that understands the lanes and knows how to run 3-4 legged trips to get the best overall ppm/
Greg, What is your background? Sales, ops or what? Just curious. And if you want to do the dispatching of drivers you'd better have insurance. If the driver you dispatch is involved in an accident you will be sued right along with the carrier that you are working with. Just a heads up.
We had a deal going like that about 15 years ago. There were about 7 or 8 of us that had trucks, all knew each other and were basically fighting for the same loads. One guys wife got pregnant and she wanted to stay home with the kid. We all banded together, she started lining up loads for us, doing the billing and paid us when she got paid, all for 10% of the gross. It worked out really good for a couple of years. We had a bunch of good contacts between us and we all stayed busy and kept everything covered so not too many outsiders got our work. Then her husband got greedy and decided to sell "his" trucking company because he wanted to be a horse trainer. He pretty much sold a black book full of phone numbers to a burnt out old driver that we had been working with for I heard $30k but don't know that for sure. He was in trouble from the word go. I hung in there for about 4 months and went back out on my own with him owing me a good deal of money. I never did get it all. He didn't last too long in the business and I still have a hard time trusting people who are in that line of work.
There is a lot more to it than one would think, know a guy in CA. who does this for some ltl stuff. If someone were to attempt this, I would make sure it was within a tight group of individuals that can count on one another. As soon as you book a load for xyz trucking & he doesn't show because he found something better in the meantime, or doesn't pay for the dispatch service things can get really interesting. Make sure you run every possible scenario out as well as trying to talk to someone who already does it because it is way more work than one thinks.
there are several variables to keep in mind but this is a great idea that could be cultivated with some guidance, research and time dedicated to it. as i plan my entry back into trucking i have asked myself why someone isn't doing this... yea.. it would be great if they were an ex-O/O but the reality of the matter is this is 2009 and industries of all sorts are outsourcing various aspects of their workload to focus on the core money making tasks, i do it in my real estate business.
Hey Greg, What have you done in transportation? Sales, ops, or what? You must not have read my previous post asking that... Tell us about your history in trucking if you would please. Thanks.
