Awhile back I had the idea that owner operators should have their own shipment tracking system like the mega carriers have for their customers.
But what if it could be better than the million dollar systems the mega carriers are using? What if...
...the tracking updated in real time and showed the shipment's progress on a map
...you could upload pictures of cargo, documents, and proof of delivery to the tracking page
...your customers could access the tracking page with just a 9-digit tracking number, no tedious usernames or passwords to remember
...someone else handled the servers and technical support
What if it were free?
So, I got together with a few other guys and we made an app called See It Ship that does all that. Did I mention that it's free?
The first version of the app is finished and it's available for Android right now. I'm hoping that I can get a dozen members to download it, use it, report any bugs, and give some feedback.
You can visit the See It Ship website, but you'll need to go to the android market to actually download it: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.seeitship.android&feature=search_result
EDIT: Major Update
When the app was being prepared for Android Market, a feature was broken that prevented the app from sending location updates when it was running in background mode. That feature has been fixed, please update your See It Ship app to the latest version.
Edit: Tracking page example
One of our forum members created a shipment using the See It Ship app, when he sends the tracking number to his customers this is what they see: http://www.seeitship.com/shipments/137213595

where do you want the feedback?
-
If you'd give it a shot anyway that would be hugely appreciated. You don't have to take pictures of any company documents or loads if that sort of thing would get you in trouble. Just creating a shipment and running the app in the background on your next trip would be a big help.
The app doesn't do location updates when it's outside of 3G range, so one of the important things we're testing is to see how spotty tracking updates get on interstate trips.Last edited: Aug 18, 2011
