On Monday, the owner of a now shuttered Rhode Island trucking company was sentenced after he admitted to tampering with driver Hours of Service records following a federal investigation into a fatal crash.
Thirty year old Woonsocket resident Damir Sisic was sentenced on Monday to three years’ probation, the first six months to be served in home incarceration with electronic monitoring, 50 hours of community service, and ordered to pay a fine of $1,000.
Sisic previously pled guilty to a charge of conspiracy to falsify records, “admitt[ing] to the court that he routinely altered data collected by onboard electronic data gathering devices installed in his trucks.”
Sisic owned the defunct Rhode Island-based trucking company Sisic Transport Service LLC (STS).
According to authorities, in April 22, 2018, Sisic provided an Oklahoma trooper with falsified driving records following a crash that killed a STS truck driver. Sisic is also accused of providing faked driving records for multiple drivers to investigators during an FMCSA compliance review.
“Sisic owned approximately eleven commercial truck tractors and ten box-style commercial trailers and employed between seven and ten drivers at a time. Each vehicle was equipped with an electronic device that recorded each truck’s location and the start and stop time of each vehicle. Sisic accessed and altered that data on thousands of occasions and routinely concealed from the USDOT and FMCSA that his drivers were routinely exceeding the maximum number of driving hours and “on-duty” hours without the required off-duty hours, in violation of federal law,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
