I would like to get any input from owner operators hauling containers out of Houston Port or port container hauling in general. Considering a major switch in industries and want to make sure income level can be sustained.

The only good thing about pulling containers is that you get to be home every night. I almost lost my truck messing around with some container companys and it was paid for.

container trucking ain't for sissies. You need to get in with a reputable company to do any good. Also, considering where your from in Tx., don't plan on being home often. There are also container haulers out of El Paso and Amarillo. From what I have seen, as a company driver container hauler, you either make money or loose money. I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in Colo., if your an O/O and lease on to a company (without your own authority, insurance, etc.) and rely on the company, expect to get paid about 74% of what the load pays. If you have your own authority, insurance, etc., depending on the company you'll make more. The company I work, we pay our O/O 95% of what the load pays, but they require him to be an independent, he has his own authority, insurance, etc. the only thing he runs under from the company is our SCAC authority at the railroads, customs bond, and cargo insurance for the railroad requirements. Now, the other companies, the majority of their owner operators are just that and leased to someone else, they make about 70% to 75% the load.
When we were busy, at one time we had 6 Independents and 10 company drivers and kept all busy. I know the one O/O who has stuck around, when it was super busy, he was pulling $4,000 per week to the truck, and he never went more than 100 miles from our yard in Denver. Years ago, we had another O/O who showed me his settlement check for one week, mind you at the time we were working 70 hrs per 6 day work week, he did $6,000 a week every week for 4 months. -
well was told they haul everyday to the family dollar distribution center in Odessa...the pay was .90c a mile loaded or empty. The more I put numbers to it I don't see how it could even break even much less make a profit....
