    Hello All,

Was hoping I could get some info, advise, and feedback on this situation below. I did post something similar in the "Truck School" forum area but wasn't able to get clear answer. Going to try and keep it short and to the point.

I'm considering career change, researching trucking schools, wanted info on "Roadmasters Truck School". Made contact with Rep from there corporate office in Florida. She knows that I live in Northern CA, and was acquiring about there Fontana, CA location. She says no problem going there if you like, but she does goe on to mention that because CA DMW is backlogged in the CMV testing (6 - 7 weeks), that there could be a lag period between the time I would finish school and then be able to test with DMV. She says this has been an issue for some students.

So this is where she throws another option at me, and this is where I need some help. She states that I can attend their Salt Lake City Location for 3 weeks. The reason for it being only 3 weeks is that I would obtain my medical card (already have) and my CA state commercial learners permit prior to arriving in SLC. The 3 weeks then would all be in the yard/pad working with the truck (PTI, backing, driving, etc), then at the end of those 3 weeks, I would be able to test out. So I ask about "How do I then receive my CA state class A license?" She says that my test scores would be sent to the CA DMV, and once I got back to CA, I would just need to go to the DMV and they would issue my license. I'm a little confused, didn't think it worked that way or maybe I'm just not understanding the way she said it. From talking to her this is the way they do it depending on where you live in relation to their school's location. Questions:

    1. Has anyone on this site gone through this as described above and how did it work out and how was the process??

    2. Is it possible that she was referring to it as: I would obtain a Utah state Class A license and then transfer that license into a CA state Class A license?? My concern here then would be would CA DMV except a Utah State license on face value or is CA DMV going to require say a written test and/or even the driving test? Again, CA DMV is backlogged on there commercial testing (6 - 7 weeks), so then I would have to wait more. I've googled this topic but couldn't get a clear answer. I am going to send the Rep an email as well asking for some clarification on this, but I know this site has a great source of info as well.

Again, thanks for any info you may have.

I'm about to start CDL school in Illinois, I live in Michigan. It will work like this for me:
    • Go to Illinois. Surrender my operator license to the state. They will issue me an Illinois operator license. This is the same as transferring my Michigan license to Illinois.
    • Take the Illinois learners permit test
    • Go to school
    • Return to Illinois DMV or Sec. of State (whatever they have there) pass the CDL test and receive my Illinois issued CDL
    • Company routes me home to Michigan with truck
    • Transfer my Illinois issued license back to Michigan
It may work differently, for you but I think how I described it how it works in many states.

Are there not plenty of cheaper options in CA than roadmaster? And theres more than 1 DMV that can do testing
