Thru shaft pinion? Can someone elaborate on how that differs from what's been used for the last 7 decades?

it is not for everyone, but those who need extra payload often go very radical in weight reduction and will like this for sure.

using 13L for high continuous power demand is not always smartest choice, for this you need volume.
iveco offer 13L 570hp engine, but if you have to pull 60 or more tones continuously it wont work as good as 16L.
some people tried to use 7.7L (354hp) engines here for 40t work with tank/silo trailers and it works only on flat. 11L comes with 456hp max, while working hard it use more fuel than 13L.

as for 12 speed amt, dont see problem in this.
i see problem in ultrashift, they are behind in technology than eaton used to sale here in second half of 90s.

as for axles, i would rather chose 6x2 than this, looks bit fragile to me

normally you would have power divider in housing or attached to front axle with differential and this would be parallel system.
here power devider is attached at beginning of 1st axle, pinion shaft is attached to it as one part, inside of pinion gear is sleeve for shaft that goes to rear axle. i think i would rather have system without power divider at all, than this
