I thought we are smart enough not to compare american sleepers to european ones.

It is a fact that a lot off Volvo drivers complain about back pain.
Just this week a 22y old driver (son off the boss) is looking at getting a new Daf because his 3y old Volvo is giving him back pain.
They will dump the Volvo too a hired hand.
Volvo has a bad ride which is amplified by their ####ty design in seats.
In the past i had a demo Volvo for 4 days.
By the end off day 2 i was in pain.
By day 4 i parked it and gave it back to the dealer.
No way i'm EVER buying a POS like that.
Would rather buy a Iveco.
I will honor Volvo by stating they have a very good and smooth gearbox.(the i-shift)
And that is why most Volvo drivers like their brand.
But not because off comfort. -
but it has numerous bad solutions, i think it was good sign of lack of experience with such cabs, i think they put this bed in longitudinal direction to bring extra intrigue to people.
there are 300L of volume in different pockets, drawners, open shelfs, and they are made well.
bed in this position lie slightly by its small part on engine tunnel (1ft high), bed spring mattress is 1ft high, sitting on 2ft high surface is not comfortable at all. below bed there are two drawners, each only 70 L. because of this folding table at back of cab which have pocket shelf they had to make drawners narrower.
stowage locker on right side can be reached only from outside, it was smaller than normal one, so lifting bed would fix problem with better usage of that volume (space under bed and above steps, space under bed-next to table), this 3 outside lockers had only 200 L of volume combined (today in modern cabs we have 400+L in two). left one behind seat is miniature one, they wanted seat to being able to move all back to sink by that way eliminate volume entirely.
i am quite sure no one needs to move drivers seat 2ft back.
kitchen module had 45L water tank volume.
module on rear wall is great, but it is nothing new and could be bought in normal R/T topline as well, it bring 350+L of volume and 50L fridge. its price was enormous and was very rare sight, it was 5400€ in 2004 (mb rip it over into mp2, but was even more rare)
today daf 845L scania S highline has 900L, mb gigaspace has 1065L, volvo 780+280L, man tgx just raised level to 1140L.
did not heard yet about new dafdaf105paccar Thanks this. -
things i noted about volvo in my short time with it.
front overhang is very short and steps are narrow, also moved sideways (bottom and top not aligned), doors cant open fully, door pocket not make easy to get inside even for someone like me, doors are quite low and you have to lean to get into. i can say this is worst entrance of any brands, only positive part is that steps are not vertical. window area in cab is very low and taller drivers have hard time to see outside. good part in terms of visability are slim mirrors
volvo as a brand which strongly promote safety should make sure that driver keep his both hands on steering wheel, dont know why it took them so long to move ishift from drivers seat. quality of materials are very poor, very opposite of volvo passenger cars. ergonomics is terrible (also in daf) you have to lean down to reach many things, like AC. volvo trip computer is difficult to use and not logical at all, display is poor and strange font dont help either.
fact that fh4 is shorter than previous cab is ridiculous, there are 3inch more gap to make it longer with current laws. you can clearly see lack of length in cab, you sit too much forward to windshield, cant adjust seat despite it has 230mm travel, cant walk in cab without being rotated sideways (despite central locker being shaped to help with this). worst part is when you want to sit from center of cab to seat, you hit shelf above windshield that holds tacho with head frequently. there is lack of space in cab, especially if there is upper bed inside (probably reason why so many opt for lockers instead of it, combination of locker and upper bed is even more weird.
i did not found any good side of this cab. also stupid solution (which is more FM related) is that air filter sits above engine, which goes into cab.....also hot air from engine and radiator heats air that goes into engine... otherwise i think volvo is very good truck but cab is complete disaster -
my father has just retired after 52years of driving never had any back problem, 99% of time spent in spring suspended trucks, no cab air ride etc, lot of time spent without air seat. + his temper dont give him any patience while doing any physical work, he would not use steps but just jump 9ft from tipper body to ground wearing shoes (not sneakers), he would lift 260lbs spare wheel 4.5ft in air without using jack/crane (he is like 165lbs) and cant admit he is old and should take care.
i think you are not objective, iveco is not comparable to anythingCat sdp Thanks this. -
spsauerland Thanks this. -
He had a bike accident.
Basicly a car ran over his back and it was broken in several places.
Has the titanium plates and screws to prove it.
He now drives a Iveco and is happy with the ride.
His boss offered a brand spanking new Volvo................guess what he said. -
Think off it as if someone was offering you a ute build in China based off a picture he saw on the internet.
But to be fair Iveco has done a lot to improve it's buildquality in the past decade.haycarter Thanks this.
