Remembering perhaps easier days I posted a couple of weeks ago in hopes I might be able to find an O.O. willing to take me out on the road with a learners permit, show me the ropes and then help me get my cdl. In turn I was willing to give drive time, perhaps invest in a business venture.
After reading more and more of the trucking industry it is a wonder anything gets moved from point A to point B because there doesnt seem to much happiness going around outt here.
People complaing of wasting away weekends in truck stop parking lots, waiting days for loads, being "swindled" into lousy lease deals, and the list goes on and on.
What about the pay...come on folks, if your working all week and going home with 300. bucks in your pocket and wondering how to pay your bills then there is something wrong.
I have wanted to drive over the road since I was young. I have done many things very succesfully in my life from earning my college degree in enviromental science; established and ran successful construction companies on both the east and west coast, to being an avid skydiver and being into photography and having many pieces published.
When I go after something I give it my all. I am into making things happen and getting a cdl and driving long haul is something ive always wanted to do . Unfortunately I will not be chasing my dream of waking up in gods country and driving another 500 hundred miles because I will not subject myself to the abuses from everyone from the "rent-a-cops" they have watching the truck stop lots, to the state troopers, shippers, receivers, dispatcher and the list goes on and on.
Seems as though the world is ######## on this industry yet everyone wanted their things yesterday.
The transportation industry is going to lose a good guy because I am not going to work countless hours and be away from my family for weeks at a time to then call home and tell my wife I only made a few dollars more then I did when I was running my paper route as a kid.
My energies for my next stage of life will be directed into another direction because from everything that you read youd have to be crazy to go this route

hire on to one of the big training outfits

most o/o insureance wont let let them train anyone, and adding a second driver aint cheap either

hire on somewhere, learn the job for a few years....then think about getting your own truck, maybe by then things will be alittle rosier!

Look ... trucking is a scam basically - and if you're not a loner, or if you don't make it your lifestyle, you're really not going to enjoy it. EVERYONE WILL GET PAID BEFORE THE DRIVER - The oil companies, the insurance companies, the federal government(in all of its entities), the state goverment(in all of its entities), the truck manufacturer, the tire manufacturer, the mechanic, the broker, the lumpers, the truck stops, the cops, your dispatcher, and everybody else are in line before you. You're not subject to overtime pay(which is a good thing:biggrin_25525:) and you're going to have to learn how to log creatively to succeed. Can you succeed? Most certainly !!! Is it easy? physically - yes ... mentally -no. There are tons of laws and people ready to enforce them and the truck stop is ready to screw you for goods and services in order to stay competitive on fuel prices and pay for that parking lot out there. But, if you're smart ... smarter than everyone else you can keep a greater %age of your money than the next guy. But, you can't take no prisoners and you can't take no crap. You must be ruthless and you must do your research.
It's a lot easier than the pioneers and don't let them tell you any different. We got air ride, air conditioning, gps, satellite radio, big hp engines, cell phones, heated mirrors, big sleepers, and good interstate roads. The pioneers had it rough. Could you image having to drive from Louisville, KY to Norfolk,VA using US 60, etc.??? Yeah, we got it good.
