I'd rather stay away from "my people", my English is good enough to find a job on my own.

My initial question is more about potential employers' stance on my status, would they be willing to hire someone who is not a permanent resident? They might be concerned about commitment issues since I am technically a temporary visitor. If anyone has similar experience, you're welcome to share.

I'm an employer. As long as you had experience, the documentation, and could drive well, we'd hire.

If your paperwork is in order and you can drive you’ll be able to get a job. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you though.

You are what is called a Resident Alien! You are legally living in the US. In fact, this status is required as the lead up to being made a US citizen, along with a history of assimilating into the country. Understand however some carriers might take a pass on you. This issue of immigration is on the front burner in the US today. I am positive you can find work as a driver. Just make sure you have ALL your paperwork with you.

He said he's not a Resident Alien aka Green Card Holder. He's on his way to becoming a Green Card Holder, possibly if he goes through the lottery process and stays in good standing with the law. I'd also stay more than 100 air miles from any U.S. border, the limits of border patrol.

True story: I was driving home from a family vacation in Lincoln, New Hampshire last July. On the way home I93 traffic is a dead stop. Border patrol! They were doing a spot check of every vehicle. "Is everyone in the vehicle a US citizen?" If you answered "NO" or didn't look like it they had a couple of trailers parked on the median. I couldn't believe they were that far away from the Canadian border doing that! This wasn't ICE, it was Border Patrol - I learned that they have jurisdiction up to 100 air miles from the border! They were hunting vacationers, seasonal waiters and waitresses I guess!

I would not advise a non-green card holder to do interstate trucking. Stay local and not leave the state. You tell a Border patrol agent you are a US Citizen and it is later determined to be a lie that person is subject to 18USC 1001.

Some drivers that post on here, are or were in your situation and had no problem being employed as truckers. Best to just get started on some applications.
Which state do you live in? We can give you some ideas as to where to apply.
Do you want a private cdl school or a trucking company cdl school?

Verify if you CAN get a CDL with your visa status. I've always had to show my legal status in the country (green card / passport) before I was issued a CDL. Not sure how a non-permanent resident alien would be treated.

With a CDL - A, the proper endorsements, a work history, I see no reason you can't find work. Some things might be off limits (say delivering to military installations, nuke power plants, etc), but you should be good to go for general freight.

More important than you think. If you have tax returns from the 1099 jobs get those together as proof. If you have periods of doing no work at all then you need to state what those periods were and what you were doing such as travelling, attending classes or caring for a family member etc.

In trucking you WILL account for every day going back 3, 5, 7 and 10 years ultimately. NO GAPS. I don't care if you were nursing your ailing daddy for 6 months at home. (Thats AWESOME!!!) but you list that situation on the application so our Trucking Companies run that past Homeland Security TSA to make sure you did not run off to Syria to learn how to be a terrorist or something silly.

Trucking is federally regulated. I don't think Legal Aliens get to do that kind of work. At some point your work visa will be done and out you go, have a safe flight home to your country.

Commercial and non-Commercial Driver License Requirements

We recognize Mexico when properly licensed for a 18 wheeler and all that goes with it. We recognize the CDL's of the Commonwealth of Canada and her Territories. These are the ONLY TWO COUNTRIES whose People and their CDL's are recognized and honored on sight if they come here to the USA with a big rig on a load for example.

ALL other countries in the world are not recognized in CDL terms. WHAT FMCSA does do is issue a basic 90 day waiver to allow a citizen from say Neverland to drive a 18 wheeler around the USA for a while. Or as much as two years which is their decision at the FMCSA level. The Citizen can only ask temporary permission to do it. The USA does NOT have to give out these Waivers so the non Citizen from another country OTHER THAN Canada and Mexico can get to drive our 18 wheelers on our roads.

Once that visa expires and either the 90 day waiver or 2 years is up out you go. You are finished here.
