Hey there, I know the rules I know all about the interstate/hazardous materials/double or triple trailer rules and regulations about having to be 21, but I have another question.

I will be 19 by the time I would be ready to start at a trucking school (I'm 18 now, 19 in June). If I went ahead and got all of my training and my Class A License now (summer), would a trucking company even consider hiring a 19 year old girl for intrastate driving? (I'm in California). Or would me going to trucking school now just be a waste of time and money?

If it's what you want to do you'll find a job will take some effort and knocking on doors but someone will give you a shot. I started at 18 hauling logs and grain.

Haul tomatoes and other produce. They will hire you. You make decent money and get some experience. Should then be able to get a job from No Cal to LA. I got my license at 18 and did just that. I believe Morning Star will help you get your CDL.

Hardest part is getting experience or time under the wheel. Driving 80000 lbs is dangerous and really requires experience and knowledge that comes with time. That being said I think hiring on as a school bus driver would give you some time under the wheel to get experience. Honestly, I don't think an insurance company even for a major trucking company is going to touch you to until 21 to 25 years old.

No offense but don't listen to this. You'll find a job and I wouldn't mess with a bus gives you no experience. Dump trucks, log trucks, chip trucks, grain trucks, hay trucks the possibilities are endless knock on doors and get what you want. Don't let people get you down the insurance thing you'll find a company. Chin up and get to trucking.

As much as I hate the ATA, this is one area with which I agree, under 21 year I'll drivers should be able to drive interstate. If you wait until you are 21, you could be 2 years in a different career.

I got my license at 17, and my father was insured under my uncle's farm policy, so I could drive in state.

Tomatoes and other farm could be an option for you.

Under 21 on the farm maybe. Following a Combine or something bringing grain to silo.

What most young ones don't understand that under 21 or even under 25 is uninsurable for intrastate or interstate commerce under many companies. One of my companies looked into putting me into a gasoline tanker at 21 and the legal laughed it off saying I needed to be 25. This was back before the 1994 CDL rules.

40 ton is dangerous in the wrong hands or inexperienced hands. If I wanted to use it as a weapon.... it's beyond dangerous.

You will learn. Fall off the horse, get back on it.

Another path is to join the military and get training into transport they will fill you up with all the heavy vehicles you can stand off road usually trying to tow a 70 ton M1a2.

The province I grew up in, class 1 at 19 years old. I know several people who went trucking right out of highschool. Some bought their own trucks or drove for family, others went to the oil patch. I see no reason why someone of legal voting age shouldn't be allowed to do a job they want. I mean I was doing brake jobs practically unsupervised at 15. What's a bigger risk? 18 year old driving a truck or a 15 year old fixing them?
