A lot of drivers have posted questions about highways other than interstates,
Generally west of the Mississippi US highways are good truck routes,,remember you are not the only one out there if you have a truck that is slower than the posted speed limit make it easy for those cars or trucks that want to pass,,pull over and let backed up of faster traffic go by,,be patient when you want to pass most times there are many good places along the way or passing lanes. You will find a lot of nice places to eat at much lower prices than most exits of the interstates,,you will find people nicer along the back roads too and many times donut chasing DOT cops are far and few. Slow down in the towns be respectful of the local traffic laws. You will see real America many places that have changed little over the years,

When ever i had a chance i use the back roads especially Co, Ut,N.M, Nv,Ks, Ok, Tx, S.C, Ga, Ms,Al, La, Fl, i really liked a lot.
Those are the souvenirs that i have from my years of trucking, also enjoy lot's of Mom & Pop restaurants & mexican restaurants.
My advice is do it when you can it's really worth the time, you also get to meet lot's of nice peoples.jraulpilot1998 Thanks this. -
I like a lot of the US highways in the Midwest. Some are built to interstate standards so you can basically set the cruise and ease along. Iowa and Ohio were some of my favorite states running the back roads

Whenever I run up to Washington/Oregon from El Paso, I cut across on US 550, US64, US 491, US191 and US 6.
-
Back when 550 was NM44 and a pig trail, we'd run 40 to US666 in Gallup and up. That was always an interesting drive on the weekend...

Back roads are the only way to go.
Had a sub 0.3% career out of route with all the "shortcuts".
There's a lot of good fun driving go be had in forests and like. say Abington to Hazard up to the parkway. or thru the blind Delaware forest in Pennsylvania.
A guy can only stand so many nights of cruise control before he has to go play in some curves. -

Another favorite back road is US 340 to US15 to US30 from I 81 to York, PA or US340 to I70 to Baltimore and avoiding the DC disaster area
rank Thanks this.
