The ol' You'd-make-more-flipping-burgers-at-Mickey D's argument is a crock of brown stuff... show me a fast food joint that will let you work 70 hours a week. Not gonna happen.

Show me a paycheck stub from a minimum wage job that is over $800... again, not gonna happen. Case closed.

When you compare straight hourly wages the burger joint will usually come out on top of otr,.....

At least flipping burgers you get to go home after your shift,.....

Yeah... go home to a tin can that you rent in a trailer park for $200 a month... where you open a can of beans every night for supper... and then light that crack pipe while you suck down a bottle of Thunderbird because your life freakin sucks.

And you just described the lives of many otr drivers,....

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a good job otr,.....Or have a good local driving job,....

I consider myself very lucky to not be otr or have to flip burgers for a living,....

But if I had to choose between otr and flipping burgers I know which one I would choose,..

That's another reason flippin burgers is better . If you trucking your life sucks and you have to sit long hours with no Thunderbird or crack pipe .

there are plenty of low wage jobs where you can get over time - and actually get paid for ALL the hours you put in. want to see a paycheck stub from a minimum wage job that is over $800? take a look at the one you get for driving a truck.

or if you drive a truck OTR, you can LIVE in a tin can, 24/7 for weeks/months at a time, eat 3 day old truckstop buffet food, never see friends/family. there are plenty of advancement opportunities in the restaurant business - manager, general manager, owner, etc for someone with drive and ambition. about the only thing driving a truck will lead to is more truck driving.

I think the reason people start these type of threads is as a warning to the folks who are starving and on the verge of losing everything, that you will NOT make the kind of money that the false ads in the paper would have you believe. forking out thousands of dollars to a truck driving school is not necessarily going to fix their problems. you better make sure you REALLY want to be a truck driver before you write that check. if you do, fine. if you don't, you'll be miserable, AND even broker than before.

bottom line is, do what you like. but a low wage job is a low wage job. just because you can work 99999 hours a week and bring home a larger check than you would if you worked 40 hours a week, that doesn't change the fact that you have an unskilled, low paying job (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

The thing that gets me is all these wannabes that get training funded by WIA . WIA offers funding for a wide range of careers . Why in the world would these people choose trucking ? Are they not intelligent enough to do something else or are they just wanting to fulfill that boyhood fantasy ? I don't care who likes that or not . We're the taxpayers handing out that wasted money . I bet most people trained in other careers funded by WIA stay with it and make a living of it while most of the ones going to CDL mills don't last 6 months .
