Hello all! Been a lurker for awhile. Been reading ALOT. (@Captain Zoom Thank you for keeping me laughing even though I'm only 30 or so pages into your topic.. And started reading it yesterday)
But back on topic. I'm 25, From Las Vegas, And planning to go into trucking soon. Getting a tour set up of a local school soon and planning to get started with that ASAP. I've been reading about the companies that start with new drivers. And @KillingTime had a post that made me start debating that Werner might not be a bad fit for a first (And hopefully last!... Ahh.. Who am I kidding. We all know better than that) trucking company. Then I started clicking more topics about them and spending the last couple of days trying to find an "Ideal" startup starting pulling my hair out.
I do understand that the team you get stuck with matters as much IF not more than the company you choose. But at the same time I can't help but wonder if I'm missing something or I've overlooked something. I've looked up a few of the more local things around Vegas and done what I can to run some backround on them.. And I get it, like restaurants people are more likely to review for bad service than good.. But at the same time some of these companies are just scary. But at this point I've devoted to this plan. I'm going to take some time trucking to at least get a feel for it and see if I can see myself making a career of it.
Now for the dead horse beating (@Captain Zoom Unless he has a spare goat).. Am I making a mistake considering Werner? I know some other companies are on track with the up and down record of them.. But so many horror stories..
Trucking School soon.. Am I beating a dead horse?

How many companies have you considered that hire new cdl grads in Las Vegas? There's at least a dozen or so.

Well, there's coast to coast, western states only, line haul.
I'll give you a few names and you can check them out. Keep in mind, just because a website has "experience required" doesn't mean they don't hire new cdl grads. Many companies are bending their own hiring criteria these days due to a shortage of "high quality" drivers.
These hire Las Vegas drivers:
Mountain Valley Express
Watkins-Shepard - owned by Schneider & has Las Vegas terminal.
Oak Harbor Freight
Old Dominion Freight Lines - apply in person
Reddaway
James H. Clark & Son
KKW Trucking
Pride Transport
Dynamic Transit
Freymiller - has "Restore Program" for new cdl grads.
East-West Inc. - www.goeastwestinc.com
Butler Transport
Navajo Express
Abilene Motor Express
Jim Palmer Trucking
Jones Bros. Trucking - Missoula,MT
Titan Transfer
That's a pretty good list to start researching. You have plenty of time. You can submit applications during the first week of cdl school.Gared Kain Thanks this. -
Haha. Wow China. I've seen you go over the top for some people. But I greatly appreciate this! I was just doing a bit of reading on Watkins-Shepard. Lots of good things to read there. But I will for sure look at all the names on this list. So many even when looking entry level were requiring a year or so exp so I was lost and kind of back to the.. "Well you need to do a year with a Mega to drive anywhere else". This is a major help. Thanks!
-
Yes, that's a myth about having to do a year with a mega. There's lots of small "mom & pop" outfits also, but you have to search locally for them. Personally, I prefer the medium to large companies because they offer a better benefits & retirement package. Some drivers want to feel like part of the family and be called by their first name, so look for small family outfits, etc. and some of us avoid that and just want to be paid on time for our work.
ExOTR Thanks this. -
To start with, I would focus on training companies who have a Vegas terminal. Having a terminal or drop yard near home is always a huge plus. Also, companies who can maybe provide a Vegas-based trainer would be a huge plus, too to make the initial training period a little less stressful. For the most part, I doubt there's a nickel's worth of difference between most/many of them.

Reddaway probably has the best benefits package, but also junky trucks for the most part.
Probably Old Dominion would be second as far as pay & benefits.
I'm a big fan of Freymiller, but you can probably do well with any of those on the list if you watch your spending and get involved with a credit union in addition to a trucking company retirement package. There's so many variables involved it makes it hard to pin it down to one specific company. So much depends on the drivers personal financial discipline.
Plenty of credit unions around Las Vegas. I belong to USAA Credit Union, but there's several more to choose from. -
@STexan I also appreciate your input as well. My wife is pretty much from Vegas. So hoping if I can make a career of this I can get her out on the road with me at least some. Maybe get her to find an area somewhere else she would like to live.. Like the south.. Preferably..Chinatown Thanks this.
