OK guy..stupid question. I've always wanted to drive. BUT, due to family and my daughter, I haven't. My daughter is going to college so I think now the time is right!
My question is, would the fact that I do have a masters degree stop me from being hired?? NOT saying because I'm too smart or anything like that...not like that at all...its just a piece of paper. I have MUCH respect for all drivers and please know I'm not trying to brag or anything. I'm an army vet from desert storm, and went to school after and got the degree. But, I've always been a blue collar guy and hate the corporate/college world. I've just done it to be home with my family.
I'm just worried that if I did go to school and got my CDL companies wouldn't hire me because they think I wouldn't stick it out due to my degree, and would hate to go thru schooling with no hope of being hired.
Any and all thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks

No, there are plenty of highly educated folk out in the field. Some were displaced and some ran away from the rat race to get away from whatever they were doing.

Short answer to your question: No. If anything, your studies, background, life experiences, and obvious maturity will make you a more attractive candidate. Go for it. BOL.
crimedoc96 Thanks this. -
I've got a 2 and a 4 year degree. When I started in the early 90's, had more than a few folk with CPA's, MBA's and other assorted letters tell me to take some basic business classes and become an independent.
22 years later now I are one. College edjumacated Owner/Operator. I don't think I would have changed the path I had taken though. College, Self-employed consultant, deployed due to 9/11 twice and now finally realizing the dream I had at age 23.sevenmph, FozzyNOK, crimedoc96 and 1 other person Thank this. -
with your education, and the lack of high paying jobs in this industry, many trucking companies will know right out of the box, you ain't gonna stay long.
your "best bet" as far as your high level of education is to get a job as management. as a truck driver, you will develop a disdain for the job for the pennies you WILL earn...jjsiegal and crimedoc96 Thank this. -
There is no such thing as being over qualified in trucking. I'd say the reason is the high turnover rate. Isn't that what companies would be scared of? That an over qualified person would easily get bored with a semi-skilled job and quit? Not in trucking, they drop like flies regardless!
Trucking is a lifestyle and all drivers are created equal regardless of their education level. Except for the ones that do stupid things!
The only thing OTR companies care about is how much you drove in the past three years.crimedoc96, CAXPT and otherhalftw Thank this. -
I appreciate the response! And trust me, I know more than a few people with masters degrees that make less money than truck drivers! A degree is no longer a guarantee of making big bucks...trust me I know lol

Also, I KNOW I'm not overqualified for the job. My book smarts don't mean I have what it takes or would even be able to back up without wrecking. I know plenty of "smart" people that don't know their a@@ from a hole in the ground.
Just didn't even want to think about going for it if there was no hope of getting hired -
I just signed up for a company sponsored school and I MBA. My uncle has been driving for a while and he said depending on the company it may be best not to mention the degrees I have. He said some managers may use the rationale that I will jump ship as soon as the economy gets better. I see where he is coming from but in my mind any person can jump ship regardless of degree. Hell there is no guarantee anyone makes it out of training even if they have that piece of paper hanging on the wall. I'm just gonna go and sit my butt in that chair, listen and learn. I think the business classes I have taken could help in an eventual O/O situation but I'm years of experience from even thinking about something like that.

I thought about not even mentioning it, but wouldn't they find out anyway? I know they do the normal background checks..wouldn't they check for education? maybe fire you for lying when you applied and find out anyway? Hate to get fired for lying??
