I drive a 4 wheeler and have driven a lot of interstate but never did I have a problem with trucks passing other trucks as I did on I-35 recently. I try to show courtesy to all drivers, 4 or 18 at all times. Since a 18 wheeler knows it takes a long time to pass another 18 wheeler, why do some of them try it going uphill? It also seemed as though the other semi did not try and slow to allow the other to pass and it sometimes took several miles to pass not to mention going uphill, the semi slowed to 65 in the left lane of a 70 mph speed zone. If this had happened a few times I wouldn't have paid attention but this was a constant problem the entire trip from Des Moines to Mpls and back. Traffic backs up behind these trucks while they're taking their sweet-##### time passing. Then there's the putting a signal on and pulling in front of you when you're trying to pass them in the left lane. I know you drive a bigger vehicle and that many 4 wheelers are stupid and inconsiderate but that doesn't give you the right to be disrespectful of us either. The highways don't belong to the semis alone as we ALL pay taxes to keep them up.

    It is getting worse, everyday,

both 4 and 18 wheelers are at fault of this.

And I see no improvement in the future.

    it IS a shame......

simply, the roads are getting more congested. drive a big truck for a day or two, that will answer most of the questions.

There are a lot of losers driving trucks that should not be now days. Same for 4 wheelers. Most company trucks are governed as well. So you get 2 trucks that won't go over say 62 and the morons will play cat and mouse blocking traffic instead of just realizing they are stuck in a POS and sit back and enjoy the scenery. Same goes for 4 wheelers. Lots of jerk-offs cutting in and out, pulling in front of truckers on entrance ramps, swerving over 4 lanes to keep from missing exit they should have been ready for instead of texting, etc, etc .

Yes gk, a large majority of trucks today and the speeds are governed by the companies that own them. Most are set at 65mph and it varies from 62mph to 75mph on the rest. Usually the ones that can run wide open are the ones by owner/operators.

You take that and drivers with the mentality they won't take their foot off the floor board and we have a "drag race" or "elephant race", what we call when let's say a 65mph truck tries to pass another 65mph truck. One might actually go 65.1mph and the other 65.3mph.
Then you factor in the horsepower and the weight they are hauling, one might out perform the other on a hill. The heavier truck will win going downhill.

I know it's a pain for the 4 wheeler. It's also a pain for faster trucks. Personally if another slow truck tries to pass me, I'll let up on the accelerator and get it over quick.
But some think if they lose a second or two counts for hours. If I want to pass, I'll use a hill to my advantage or just set my cruise to a slower speed.

But then on the other end of the spectrum, most 4wheelers are breaking the laws tailgating, speeding, no signals with their impatience and need to win..... Put the same people from them 4wheelers into a truck and they would do the same thing. It's hard to find a courteous driver anymore. I am and I'm glad you are. But those type drivers are out numbered.

The gov't has talked about making all trucks 65mph. You think it's bad now, wait until then. Unless the gov't regulates everything and actually enforces all traffic laws, our highways will always be a mess. The rate of vehicle growth is quickly out numbering the capacities of the highways.

One way to enjoy the ride is to set your cruise on say 60 mph and let everyone pass you. Then there are less conflicts. But we know nobody can do that. Everyone tries to save time on the highways. You can take a very nice docile person and they can turn into a raging madman on the road ways. The psychological factor always amazes me.

And like poppy said, everyone that has rode with me for the first time always comments, "I didn't know it was like this". It is an eye opener.

Registration = $2500 (give or take)
    HVUT = $550
    Fed. Fuel Tax = $0.244/gallon (diesel) (18,510.027 gallons = $4516.45)
State fuel tax = (varies state to state) = $6000 (give or take)

Not to mention the excise tax paid on the tires I bought (10 tires * $34.59 = $345.90)

So far, the tally for my contributions to the highway fund comes to $13,912.35....should I continue?

Do you REALLY want to play the "we all pay taxes" card? How much did YOU contribute to the highway fund last year?

Now I don't know what you do for a living, but how would you feel if some clueless individual came into your work place getting in your way, reducing your productivity, and frequently threatening your personal safety? I'm guessing you wouldn't be the happiest person in the world, and might even be on the verge of intolerance toward such behavior...yet that is what a lot of people in their cars (granted, many of them do so unknowingly) do to us....riding in our blind spots, risking life & limb JUST to get in front of us (whether they are 1/2 block away from their turnoff or not), etc. etc. etc.

Bottom line, you in your car can alter your speed/direction with greater ease than I can in an 80,000 pound truck. Keep in mind that respect goes both ways. Let me over nice & easy when I am catching up to a slower truck, and I get out of the way again as soon as possible. Pin me in the slow lane, and I'll ride in the left lane as long as I need to in order to pass every slower truck I see once I manage to make my way over there. I don't fight my way into the passing lane more than once....but once there and I get 'er wound up, I can run the speed limit in every state.

Right on, bulldog...usually consider you much more harsh than necessary, but well put.

In my Grand Prix, I paid $32.25 for a year's registraton, and I'm sure most of that went to the State of Texas... and mostly to pay the salaries of the people doing the DMV work... and those pretty license plates.

So... in my personal vehicle, other than the few cents per gallon I pay in taxes.. that's IT.

Thanks, everyone. I'd forgotten about the governors that are on a lot of trucks. I certainly don't want it to look like I'm singling out 18 wheelers because I ran into a larger % of 4 wheelers who had no clue of how to drive it's just that you guys are so much bigger you get my attention faster! Stay safe.

gk. thanks for understandin. I know how you feel. I hate it myself when a fellow driver who knows he gots a slower truck decides to pass me then does the "holding pattern" and when i get tired waiting for him to pass i hammer down to force him to get back in behind, then of course he has the idiot brain to try again.

please dont take this wrong but the highway system they are the truckers roads. the city roads can be considered the local folks roads.
I see this as a mutual respect between the the normal folks and us truckers. respect our roads and allow us the room and we need do the same while in the cities and towns. granted when we make very difficult 90* turns around the corners, understand it sometimes takes us the whole intersection to not run over the guy sitting in his beautiful expensive BMW while trying to miss the corner on our right side.
