    Hello,

I was laid off from my instructional design job of 16 years a month ago. I've decided on a radical change in careers. I'm looking at attending Knight Transportation's CDL training program in Phoenix, AZ, soon. I had my physical yesterday and am scheduled to take my CDL exam this Tuesday (for which I'm studying hard).

I have a couple of questions (probably more soon):

    1. I live about 3 hours away from Phoenix, where Knight has a terminal. When it's time for my two or three days off, will I have to drive the truck to the terminal and drive my car home? And then drive my car to the terminal and leave it there while I'm on the road? Of will I be able to drive the truck to my house? Does this vary based on the company and type of driving I'm doing?

    2. I'm assuming I will not have a truck that is solely assigned to just me, and that every time I go out on the road, it will be in a different truck. I'm a non-smoker and wouldn't want to drive a truck in which someone has smoked. Do most companies have "non-smoking" trucks?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Jay

Being 3 hours away is probably far enough where they will authorize you take truck/trailer home one empty nearby.

Typically, OTR drivers are assigned a truck and will keep that truck to themselves as long as they don't require to take some extended time off, in which case you may be asked to take it to a terminal and clear your stuff out.

Most carriers don't have a strict policy to keep some trucks "non-smoking". You can request a non-smoking truck, but at a carrier like Knight with fairly high turnover, don't get your hopes up too high. It will be luck of the draw, and depending on how many open trucks they have to choose from, your results will vary.

Don't know a whole lot about knight.
ususally smoking or non smoking trucks get reassigned to whom ever. . At more then 50 miles from my home terminal, I'm one of those that takes my truck . best to work it out with the company

    1. Question for Knight.

    2. Be grateful if the previous driver didn't poop on the bunk.

    Good luck, Jay.

    all krap aside...

Does knight detail trucks before they're reassigned or is it the driver's job?

    curious

Why not ask Knight Transportation there the ones you'll be driving for i'm sure during orientation they will have a questions session this is your opportunity to ask them.

Keeping in mind that I left Knight in 2004...During orientation, they told us we would be getting new trucks. But if the trucks had been in use before, they would be detailed...
Well, if it is convenient for them at the time, they MIGHT be detailed. Mine were not. But I did seem them detailing a few trucks in the Denver yard.

Excellent point. But you forgot one bit of advice. That is, "take all their promises with a grain of salt."

    Longarm and dca Thank this.

Can't guess what Knight does after tractor is empty. Many companies check for damage & some obvious sabotage then assign it to the next driver that needs a truck. A thorough cleaning is often the new driver's job if he wants to volunteer to do it. You can drive it as is or clean it to your standards, the companies I've worked for are just wanting you to drive it. I usually spent time cleaning it thoroughly and the just kept clutter to a minimum and emptied my trash daily.

If it's a smokers truck, clean all glass & hard surfaces with alcohol and soak all soft surfaces, including headliner, with fabreeze. Let fabreeze sit & work on those surfaces as long as necessary.

BTW don't be afraid to ask for non-smoking trainer. Then decide if you want to wait for one or train with next available trainer and get it over with. Riding with a trainer is hardest part of entering the industry for most of us. It gets better with your assigned tractor.
