Hello gents 'n lass's. I've been lurking around the forum now for a few weeks and decided to make my debut with a question or seven. I'm currently studying for my CDL permit that I hope to take within the next weeks time. Having read some here and there on this forum I believe I know the path I want to take with the industry.
Being based in Indiana, specifically by Indianapolis itself, I think Schneider is the company I want to hire on with. Their willing to pay for my CDL school (Sage Trucking School) and I think a year is a reasonable exchange for the money they're spending on me. Would it be possible to hire on with Schneider for their CDL training program while running a regional route? I believe after school I would meet the qualifications. It may be something I'll have to go into without knowing and possibly land their by luck. I'm going to attempt at getting as many endorsements as possible while in school or shortly after so that I can become marketable to a wider range of companies after my tenure with Schneider is over with.
May be my management experience talking but I'm not a big fan of going into something without a solid plan and I feel like there are far too many variables in mine. Any help/advise offered would be well welcomed.

Talk to the recruiter at Schneider. They will tell you if you can do that. Good luck on your test and in school. I used to train and I will leave you with this- this is a marathon not a sprint, we are in this for the long haul

Most places will say you need to be with the company for a time before you are eligible for a dedicated run. Usually its somewhere from 3 months to a year of OTR driving before they will consider you. They might want to see how you run and decide if you are a good fit for the dedicated account, can make on time deliveries, and trip plan properly....etc.
Like jaso said talk with the recruiter about it but take what he has to say with a grain of salt. I've heard many stories about recruiters luring someone in with the promise of a dedicated run but once you get through orientation they don't get it for one reason or another.

Best of luck...you live in an area where the options are endless for the industry. Don't get to far ahead of yourself with plans...be flexible and take it one day at a time.

Thank you for the sound advise everyone. I'll work on my wanting to plan every detail tendency. I might not be able to completely snub it out though. Think I could convince a recruiter to give me their word in writing? Or record our conversations as proof of promises made?

See if you can get the recruiters email and then send one of those..."As per our conversation today..." emails. As for the plan every detail tendency, I to suffer from that...this industry will break you of that...go with the flow. If you plan on sticking with it for any length of time you will find it easier to study patterns and plan accordingly.
Freight needs to be moved and it doesn't much care about your plans. Finding the company with the freight that best fits you is the goal.TruckDuo, Roknric and LittleLucky Thank this. -
The regional route appeals the best to me because of the weekly home time. Having a son, I would like to see him as often as I can. Besides him and the child support payment to his mother, I think OTR would fit me the best in terms of lifestyle that I'm looking for. Also I'm considering paying for trucking school either out-of-pocket or seeing if I could use my college grant money for it if I can find a place that qualifies for that. Not trying to tie myself down to poverty wage to "pay back" a company. If that's the route I have to go though, I'll gladly pay my dues.
