In my quest to speed up my tarp time I kept coming back to how long it takes me to separate my bungies, you know, grab one and shake shake shake...shake your bungies. So I came across some aluminum carabiners also known as 3 inch spring clips and thought if I replaced the s hooks with these maybe they wouldn't get all tangled up. And maybe they would stay in the d rings better and not poke holes in my tarp. They may not work but it didn't cost much to try. If you've tried these and you didn't like them please say why.

Good Idea but honestly I think it would be a issue in a few ways....

Cost to buy clips is cheap when your only buying a few of them, but think about how many bungees you might use on a load and then times that by 2.. Even at only using 100 bungees that's 200 clips let say they cost $2/ea, that's $400 in clips... I am sure you use more then 100 bungees.. Even if you got the clips at $1/ea that still $200 in clips...

There clips can and will break over time.. The spring would wear out and you would end up with tangled bungees in the long run.. Not to mention how they would re-act in the snow and cold weather... Ice and snow build up on them as well...

I think the best way to store bungees is using a pipe and attaching them from end to end... I would use the rolls that shrink wrap was spun onto.. They are nice thick cardboard rolls... But any open ended pipes would work even if you used like PVC piping.. The shrink wrap tube tho is cheap (free if your around shippers that have empty's laying around), it's light and it's durable..

I just think those clips would make for slower tie down times as you gotta open up each clip when your taking them off... The bungee you just lift and pull out... Sure I'm not talking about spending an extra hr or anything maybe 10-15 mins extra in warm weather but in the cold weather it will make the time longer pushing each individual clip... Especially if they are frozen shut...

Like I said good idea but I think on the long run you will not like it.. I mean if you only are in warm weather temps then it will work pretty good but again the cost doesn't really match up to what you gain (if anything) but that's just me personal opinion. If you only tarp small stuff that doesn't require many bungees then sure it might be ok as well.. I just don't think you can get much cheaper then free shrink wrap rolls and attach them to that.. Or even if you purchased PVC pipe it's still cheaper (a 8ft PVC pipe like $10-15 can make you like 6 bungee holding pipes)... It keeps the bungees untangled and neat, give you something to carry around rather then a pile of bungees and it quick to take them off and hook them up on the trailer/tarp...

This is what I did when I was on flatbed and it worked extremely well for me..

What about the extra time in will take putting the bungies on the pipes verses just dropping them into a bucket or a tote? I appreciate your opinion though. Yes they were 98 cents each but I might be able to buy them cheaper on amazon or something if I want more. And you may be right about the not lasting long. Just trying something different.

bad monkey, a great idea, over the long haul buying in bulk it would work, cause my biggest grip is bending the hooks flat where they go thru the rubber

Understood, these needed some lube and persuasion to get in to the ends but if they don't work I saved all of the s hooks. Thank you chicknwing for the link. Thats much cheaper and maybe a little better design than what I got.

I also have done the pvc pipe cut to length and stretch and place the bungees on it. I personally like it.

I think it would be cool if a "share ideas & tools " thread would be started and stickied.
