Rand McNally is putting out a new one the 520 has some new features that could be useful. WiFi, Route options, Fuel Pricing.

calling for directions is the best way to go.

    ummmm, me no speakie espanol.

while the atlas is nice. for the useful information in the front pages. i'll take my electro gizmo over the map any day. 2 seconds to plot your address and away you go.

no need for atlas, no need for directions. certainly not in espanol.

there's one thing that no one seems to take into consideration. and that's the CLOCK. time you lose calling for, writing down, and following directions.

i understand the old timers not wanting to learn new technology. but let's be realistic. you have to scroll through the various state maps. and plot your course to town. THEN, call for directions once your in town. write directions down. and slowly go through town as you wait for that street your supposed to turn on.

gps. it's a time saver. and speaks englisio

My brother and I use GPS (not currently using a "truck friendly" form yet), the atlas, Google Maps, and make phone calls for directions. Our dispatcher doesn't usually give us a phone number, so we often have to rely on GPS and Google Maps to find some out of the way locations. As noted earlier, relying on GPS can get you in real trouble. We've had our share of dicey situations when Google Maps wasn't available (my T-mobile hotspot wifi has poor coverage). Best thing is to use Google Maps when you have it available to really study the location and the best way to get there. Often Street View will allow you to read signs ("Shipping/Receiving", "NO TRUCKS", etc.) and see landmarks that are very helpful. Whenever possible we will compare the "GPS Lady" with Google Maps for directions.

I've talked to drivers using truck friendly GPS like Rand McNally and they've also reported running into problem routing that they double check.
