Hey everyone. I'm a new owner operator. I haven't purchased a truck yet. Most finance companies wont dull out cash unless I have work lined up. . I was wondering how you guys go about approaching people for business . And where do you tend to go. Quarries ? The construction companies? Or do you go to the yard where they load you up. Do you make cold calls or do you set up an appointment. I've been contacting the likes of tilcon, sanzari , and a bunch of quarries and I have not received any calls back. I dont know if I'm doing it all wrong or they are just not responding. I live and work in the north jersey area and will be trying to service the area and tri state and Pennsylvania. Thanks you time
Trying to find work before buying the truck.

A new interstate, Interstate 11, is already under construction from Nogales, Arizona to Canada.
If you don't mind moving west, there's a lifetime of work building that interstate. Construction is going on now between Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Best thing to do is talk to a driver doing what you want to do. You'll avoid endless run around and get the cell number you need to get you started. Find them at truck stops or wherever. Most are happy to help but dont let an occasional old crouch stop you. Some forget they were new at it once too

To get in the biz you needed to be apart of the biz. Sad to say but aggregate/asphalt haulers don’t tend to help others unless there’s something in it for them. So if you don’t have anything to offer you may not get the answers you want.
Rates are never the best and your truck will take a beating. And depending on the rates. Your home life will take a beating. Will you run the truck day & night? Do you make enough to hire a driver to do the shifts you don’t want to do?
I’m a company driver here in Vegas with the biggest union operated company. We bill direct with great rates. But the owner ops who work for us barely make fuel/maintenance. I own an 8 axle transfer in Oregon that I have a driver in it and is leased onto Knife River Corp. I bought the truck from them and the work came with it. Your best approach is to walk into the quarry offices and find out who they use to haul there materials. See if they are contracted or just gentlemen’s agreements. You may be able to snag a spot on the just in case list. You’ll know who the main haulers for a pit is cause they are usually the first in line every morning waiting to load up.
Best advice I say is be aggressive. Don’t make friends. Just worthy acquaintancesAbtriaxles Thanks this. -
Look into Stavola, they have a hired hauler link on their website. It lets you know the insurance requirements and all the other important info to work for them. They are a good company to get hooked up with as they do paving/milling (hourly rate) and also run sand and stone out of their quarries (by the ton rate). Heres the link the trucking coordinators name and number are on the top of the page. Good Luck Stavola.com
