I have a great union job presently driving a greyhound bus east of the Mississippi. love the road. in a couple of years I want to take the reins and saddle up to a slower life.
18 s are out of question since I want slower pace.
LTL, hot shot, expedited. have garnished some interest.
hauling 5 car set ups, and small box vans etc...in the mix
need help zooming in on what helping me to be able to say with confidence this is what I want.
I need to be able to purchase a vehicle or combination that I can operate hauling loads that will not be my slave driver.
I am thinking a used 45k medium class 300 HP min. single axle with 48-60 sleeper so I can go flats dry ref/box or auto trans, even boat
dually 3500 is a step down but then you have motel expense.
don't want to do local work, I want to be able to run hard for 2/3weeks then vegatate. at my own pace
trying to focus

For 45k you can get yourself a nice used real truck with twin screws. That way you won't be limited on the frieght you can haul due to weight restrictions.
Pmracing Thanks this. -
trying to keep it simple lightweight, main reason for single is having sleeper, over a 450 class dually. trying to fixate on vehicle most cost effective against money earned and spent.
a large tractor in my mind would put me in the same boat as ever one less. -
45k included whatever type of trailer I will decide on
-
Maybe you should focus more on the type of frieght you want to haul. What are the rates, how consistent. Can you get the customers and so on. That will give you a better idea of the type equipment you will need. The only reason I suggest a big truck is because you always haul lite in one, but you can't haul heavy in a medium class. If you get a nice set up for a medium then find a different type of frieght that you really want and it requires a twin screw then you will have to start all over again.

I understand your reasoning and it makes good financial advice for 99% of people on this board.
The reason for my post is to try to find a good truck/freight combination that will provide a fair income when hauling but a vehicle combination that can sit in my yard and not eat up my bank account -
I would say get a tractor n a small trailer but its hotshot stuff.

Like any business, if it isn't making money it's costing money. Are you going to commit yourself to a business or do you just want a hobby?

Talked to a guy a couple months ago that hauled horses. Heavy duty truck, but not a semi. Trailer made up for it had a sleeping compartment. I'm sure other freight would fit into the trailer if not hauling livestock.
Seems to me that would be a little slower paced. -
again you are on point for 99% of the people on this board, I will spell it out better. I am at the age I want to stop the 12/15 hour days the 8 day weeks. collect some of my retirement some call entitlement.
but I am a wanderer, a tumbleweed. I have got to be able to worked the road somehow or I will go nuts if I just stop driving.
so I want some equipment that will get me out there but not burden me financially to the point it can't sit for weeks
