I'm trying to get started in truck driving. I need my CDL training first.

I applied to every company with sponsored training that I could find, and got turned down by all of them. Some because of being fired from a job, some because I have an accident in the last 3 years, and a second in 5... My record isn't terrible, I have 2 accidents, one over 3 years ago, and one about to be 3 years ago. One was my fault, the other I was not at fault, and rear ended by a car behind me after we were both stopped. I have a ticket for the accident I was at fault for, and a ticket just over 3 years ago for improper lane usage (I passed too slowly on a 4 lane highway)

I have a few questions now:

If I got the training on my own through a driving school, will it be easier to find a job, or are they going to be just as strict?
If a private driving school is a smart idea, does anyone in NJ know any ways to get help paying for one when your credit is bad? (since NJ punishes us for being responsible, but being unemployed, even for being fired, is guaranteed free training...

I think you're going to have to wait 3 years.

Maybe there is a local company that will hire a noob. Perhaps start out driving a dump truck.

considering all the researched i've obtained, your being disqualified because of the time period of the accidents. Its pretty much a waiting game because you're considered high risk when you're involved in an accident regardless of fault. Something will work out for you, just a matter of time... good luck:biggrin_25525:

If you can manage to go through a CDL school at your own expense, there are companies that will hire you.

Go learn a trade and run from this ''fantasy'' of wanting to be a trucker.

I wonder what you got fired for. Being fired usually wont cause much of an obstacle in finding another job unless it was something serious like a theft. Previous employers are not able to say much anyway other than your employment was terminated.

Awe but hell miss out on all the "fun", "freedom", and all the other "joys" of trucking. Seems like everybody that sees me now that my dad used to work with shakes their head and asks me why my dad didn't teach me better than to become a trucker. Can't blame my dad for my own insanity then again I was kinda born into it life long dream and I knew what I was getting myself into.

    landstar8891 Thanks this.

My son got started in trucking with a Coke distribuitor, he started out as a sales/prompter/store stocker then transferred into driving a route truck. His employer helped him get his cdl in their truck.

Goodwill Industries has a free CDL program, but I don't know the qualifications. Maybe it's on the website.

Just talked to Goodwill in Dallas, they check past employment, criminal background and driving record, you have to fill out an application. There's some sort of board meeting, where you have to be approved. Dont really remember what else he said. But, since they're basically giving you $3000, they're kinda picky.
