another dumb question from yours truly...
So i bought a used flatbed and the state inspection is current... the sticker is on there and it expires this summer. But the guy i bought it from didn't give me paper that details the inspection. he said his former employer had it and they tossed his file when he quit
so now i'm trying to get started at my new job but they need my inspection first. i'm trying to avoid wasting money paying for another inspection so i was wondering if any of you know who might have it on file. i already checked with the place he got it inspected but they didn't have it
just thought i'd check with you guys before i waste money. would some govt office have it on file? and why do i need the ###### thing anyway since the sticker is valid. what's the point of the sticker then?
thx for any help

Personally I'd just get an inspection. It's only about $35-50 at a Speedco, Petro or wherever - for trailer only.
-
oh wow ok, was thinkin it would be heavily taxes like everything else seems to be in trucking. well right on
until my next dumb-noob thread.... -
UGJ for godsake i went to get it inspected and the lady at the desk tells me i need proof of insurance.
"TRAILER insurance?" i ask..
"Uhmmm... yeah?"
WTF. no one ever told me i need trailer insurance. in fact i was told specifically i do not need trailer insurance
god i'm just sick to my stomach right now... i've had this truck 6 weeks and haven't had income this entire time. and the closer i get to getting to work it's like some new little hoop to jump through pops up. i'm about ready to sell this ##### thing and move in with my gf and mooch off of her because i'm running out of money. Does the company that you are going to lease to have a shop with mechanics that can do the inspection?
-
If your gf has no ties to trucking then that's one less headache. Everything in this business has strings attached and nothing is as advertised.
BORNtoROAM Thanks this. -
Here's the form and sticker. There's nothing on it about insurance. The inspection report is to certified the unit is mechanically sound, not financially sound. That comes with registration.

This problem took care of itself today in the most unexpected of ways...
I told my company what the deal was and the girl is like "oh, whoops i have your trailer insurance.. i forgot to tell you you'd need that". so with insurance in hand i take it to be inspected ($62 standard rate for DOT insp. btw)
when i get to the place i inform the lady it already has a current inspection sticker good until May. and she's like "Oh, well this won't cost you a dime then. I'll just print up the VIR for your trailer, they all get entered a government database."
and just like that i had what i needed at no cost. unbelievable. how come nobody else could tell me about this? even the place who previously inspected the trailer last year who told me "we don't keep records past 30 days" ?
Unbelievable!
So this might help some of you in the future if your inspection reports ever come up missingLast edited: Feb 6, 2014
