TSA carriers see volume recovery to begin in second half of 2009

Carriers of Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (TSA) are optimistic that a turnaround of the current slowdown in Asia-U.S. container volume, affected by the U.S. housing and credit crunch, would begin in the second half of 2009.
The lines say they remain focused on addressing various fixed operating costs that have not been fully collected in rates and surcharges, and that continue to rise. Following a series of CEO-level meetings held in Geneva in late September, TSA reported a tradewide 6.9% year-to-date drop in Asia-U.S. cargo volumes over January-June, compared to the same period a year earlier - from 3.30 million to 3.07 million 40-foot containers (FEU).
