Bad teeth on the ring gear. One section of the gear has worn teeth. Pull transmission, new flywheel, go back to trucking.
-
But the starter is not engaging.
-
Yup bad ring gear teeth, most engine always stop in the same position, so one position on the ring gear gets worn enough the starter won't grab.
-
Actually they stop in one of three positions because of the compression of the engine.
Though all three position do wear and it's only about 1-2 teeth in each position that wear. When these get wore out, the starter gets stuck between the teeth or jumps over the teeth and won't turn engine over.
While you have the transmission out, putting new ring gear in, better put new bendix on the starter. -
You usually can nurse it along, if you get it started. When you shut it off, use the clutch to kill the engine while turning the key off. This is probably hard on the clutch but if your changing the ring gear, you will have the trans. out and probably want to change the clutch while there.
