I need to correct and clarify my "misunderstanding" of why the Jakes were not and should not be covered under warranty. I thought the Jakes were damaged by the break down. They were not. The DD rep instructed Stoops to rebuild the Jakes as to assure that the new motor would not be in jeopardy, since they were unable to determine whether or not the Jakes were the original cause of the break down. The rebuilding of the Jakes were a preventative measure, therefore the cost is my responsibility.
Now then, Yesterday as instructed by the Regional Manager, at 2:15 pm I called the Daimler customer service line to ask if they could find out what the current status on my motor is, if they could help expedite this matter, and why the Jakes were not covered under warranty. They said they would call the service manager to get info. I said are you sure, that will only get him mad at me. They said don't worry, the would approach it in such a manner as to assure his not getting upset with any one, and instructed me to call DD cust. srvc line and reluctantly I did, even though I was specifically told not to by the Regional manager. I was assured this was the appropriate way to handle this since it is a Detroit Diesel warranty.
At 2:27pm I called told them the story and what my question were. They sent an email to the DSM (District Service Manager) asking him for information. DDCSC (Detroit Diesel Customer Service Center) called me back at 3:13pm and said they did hear back via email from the DSM, he said he'd handle it.
At 6:21pm I get a call from the Service Manager who is THOROUGHLY PISSED OFF. He proceeds to chew me a new *ss over the fact that "You botched the story. That is not why your jakes are not being covered" He then told me again why I had to pay( as I have explained above) Now there is conflicting stories, you got a bunch of people involved, you botched the story up as I knew you would, and now you have got every one in from the CSC, Freightliner, and everyone with conflicting stories. Now I have to spend this evening answering emails!" He then promptly hung up and I haven't heard one word from anyone at Stoops. I will keep you all updated as it continues.
Turning up a Detroit, help or hinder?

Buy a half hour from a lawyer and let him rip a few new ones.
I would be suspect of them using the wrong head, if the valves wouldn't adjust it could be wrong rocker arms or right rocker arms for the head with your old cam, timing could be off by one tooth.
Their whole attitude will change when your attorney contacts them, everyone from the service manager down are trying to cover their mistakes. -
DD is being pretty cool about it actually. They're giving them the benefit of the doubt.
It was pretty evident that the Jake's were not damaged because of the valve failure. I'm still going to stand my ground that they were malfunctioning or sticking and caused the exhaust valves to hit the piston, and bend. From there, what happens is that they break, and the pieces go to town on the remainder of the valve-train.
Jakes only actuate the exhaust valves. They way they work is explained in detail here with a nifty schematic.
When a Jake slave solenoid sticks, it will hold the exhaust valves open too long and a piston will strike it when it hits top dead center.
But, proving it at this point is moot. Because what more than likely happened, if they found the Jake with the sticking solenoid, they disassembled it and just said a generic, "You need to have the Jakes rebuilt."
The bottom line is that Stoops should have rebuilt the Jakes (at your expense) the first time you had the overhaul.
If anything, I would see what the price of a Jake rebuild is from another shop for that motor. Or even a set of "reman" Jakes and then the labor to install them and run the overhead.
That's $500 per cylinder. Ouch.
I just hope she gets her truck back up and running and it lasts for a while when it all shakes out.Higgy Thanks this. -
I know it doesn't help now, but next time try Inland Detroit in Gary.
Higgy Thanks this. -
Wow, you're patient. I wouldn't have taken but about 5 seconds of ### chewing before I went off right back. And as soon as that conversation ended, I'd be right back on the line to Daimler telling them exactly what just happened.

Something smells REAL bad here !! I agree with OLD MAN buy a letter from an Attorney !! That may get things rolling along
PS and the guy that chewed your AS... Go visit his Boss and call the Sheriff ! Remember that Truck is private property and they have caused injury ... GO hire an Independent Mechanic to inspect what has been done or not done in writing!! THEN u will have an excellent chess move against this monster! -
Morning everybody,
It's Sunday the 15th. I got my truck back on Wednesday the 11Th. I never did talk to the Srvc, Mngr. (no suprize there), I did have the 2nd shift srvc guy come out because I wanted to check and ask somethings before I left. It looked good, fluids full, belts tight etc. So, off I go to get my trailer and then to Cicero to load. It did gooduntil I was headed North on Harlem off 95th Str. I heard a pop and then nothing on the dash, but the ruck sounded different, but acted fine and there was a rumble that came during up shifting. At the customers, I checked under the hood, couldn't find anything. We schedualed me to stop by the folloing night on my way back to Chicago. After loaded I made it through Chicago updated the srvc mngr acts fine but rumble is almost constant. When I was getting on the toll rd off 94 as I was gearing up, the turbo cut out for a micro second, caught itself and was fine. Made it to the 146 and slept. While coming across OH the next day I notice the turbo as acting funny when it was winding down just after a grade. It acts like it want to wind up again super quick 3-4 times and then levels off. It's just like when you are trying to sneaz and you inhale three to 3 times quickly and the sneaz never comes. It's the best way I can describe it. That was going on frequently all the way to Cleveland. When I was coming out of deadmans curve on 90 east in Cleveland, the turbo cut out again as I was gearing up. Same as the night before. Ok, got UL and Reloaded and back to dealer. The turbo acted fine with the cruise set, but it was really windy heading west. So the "sneaz thing" happened 1 time on my way there. Grabbed a mechanic and went for a 15 mile test drive. The turbo never did cut out and it didn't do the "sneaz thing" during test drive. The rumble was taken care of, it was an exhaust pipe that was hit while driving on Harlem and it was moved. They adjusted it and now rumble gone. On the way back to Cleve Friday night, the turbo did the "sneaz thing" all the way from 94 in Gary. Also I accidentally hit the high idle while fueling and noticed the turbo was fluxuating, but the motor stayed consistent. They said that was normal. I've never had a truck do that before. So, other than she is still a fuel sucking pig, I guess it's ok for now, I'll keep you posted. Oh, by the way Thursday night I did 45 to 50 mph the whole way across IN, a total of 811 miles,13 hrs of sleep time and I averaged 4.3mph
As far as the $$. We made arrangement for repayment, ( thank God for my lady in the corp. office, or I think that would have never happened) and they cut off my account until I'm paid in full. I ended up with a new turbo, accuator pin, and a new clutch as well. Now the noise in the shifter is gone( I was told that was probably an isolater on top of the tranny).
And as far as the rest( turbo and such) they said drive it until it breaks or you get a warning light or code of some sort.
I am soooooo happy to be working, you have no idea. I hope I never have to go through that ever again. Still need to figure out fuel milage. And 55mph is not the answer, neither is 65mph and idling while sleeping does not help at 1gal./hr either. I have not heard good things about the 2006 14L ddec5 motors at all. I have read a thread on here aboout "14L detroit diesel update" or something to that effect about bypassing the turbo and messing with the EGR & yadda yadda yadda. It all sound like grief and since I have 1yr from 12/2/2011 for a warranty, I don't intend to mess with it.
Thanks everyone for the advice and support durring this whole mess. I will be sure to let you know if anything else transpires. Here's the link I was speaking of.

Glad you're rolling, Higgy!
The sneeze thing is real common with the Detroits. It's the EGR valve. Easing into the throttle seems to help, but if it's getting to be all the time, instead of just after a throttle application; the EGR valve is shot. Not what you want to hear, I know. I've got 650K on the original in this one, and it still sneezes ocassionally; but several of the other guys are on their 3rd or 4th valve.Higgy Thanks this. -
So did they take the motor back out and put the right one in? I remember reading about them giving you the wrong block.
-
we had some Columbia daycabs back in 2007 and they would do that. They were penske lease trucks and they said it had something to do with a sensor on the transmission. Once they changed them out, they did not do it again for a few months, but then they would start it again and the same thing would be done. Something with the 14L Detroits?????
Gald to hear you are working again tho. I sit for 2 days and start getting stir crazy.....
