A question for all of the old school truckers (and old school at heart): do you have any experience with twin stick transmissions or auxiliary boxes hooked to modern power plants? I’ve been told by experienced drivers that installing, for example, a 5x4 Spicer behind a modern engine would destroy the auxiliary box because of straight cut gears. Another gentleman who’s been driving nearly as long as I’ve been alive told me that auxiliary boxes are typically only rated for up to 900 lb ft. of torque.
I’m curious because I have found examples of drivers mentioned on YouTube who have always had a twin stick hooked up behind a relatively high output engine. Old School Jerry on The Flannel Phillip channel has one behind an N14 Cummins (1650 lb ft.). Another guy mentioned, called The Lettuce King, out of Canada has always had one hooked to a 3408 Caterpillar (1800 lb ft.)
So I wanted to get your take and your experience. Is it true or is it just a myth? I know that you can have one put in a brand new 389 (as of a couple years ago) but Peterbilt will not cover it under warranty. Thanks for all the input.

There are plenty of folks that run them behind higher horsepower engines.
They won't last as long as new transmissions and need to be driven with care, like avoiding full throttle at lower rpms, but they can work.JolliRoger, jamespmack, Blue jeans and 7 others Thank this. -
There is an interview on big rigs videos from 3 Bar C and he runs 1000hp cats in his two trucks and that 79 KW has twin sticks.
Crude Truckin', Sons Hero, Blue jeans and 2 others Thank this. -

We run quite a few twin sticks behind Cat 3406s. We've had good luck with them lasting but most of the drivers know how to handle them without tearing anything up.
If you're getting sticks just because you want them you'll probably be okay. But if you have somebody else drive that truck you better make sure they know what they're doing.
No shame in getting an 18 spd.JolliRoger, 25(2)+2, Sons Hero and 4 others Thank this. -
Like many other things with these trucks, what you do with your right foot has a big effect on the longevity of the transmission.
There’s a few guys out here still running sticks, and with bigger HP, it’s just knowing when to use all them horses….‘Olhand, Gearjammin' Penguin, Sons Hero and 8 others Thank this. -
JolliRoger, pete781693 and jldilley Thank this.

There's a couple members here that are running Twin box's behind some serious Hp motors..
As @Oxbow said you better know what your doing and when too & when not to shift otherwise your gonna have a pile of toasted scrap metal
There's little tricks and improvements that need to be done with higher hp motors in front of them .. but thats a whole different subject of another day
I ran a 5 & 4 behind a 3408 for years .. got along well with that combinationLast edited by a moderator: Sep 11, 2022
Crude Truckin', Sons Hero, Blue jeans and 3 others Thank this. -
The stronger the engine, the most finesse is required from a driver.mustang190, JolliRoger, Gearjammin' Penguin and 16 others Thank this. -
TripleSix, Blue jeans, Cattleman84 and 1 other person Thank this.
