The reason they call them "pots" is they are poteniometers

 

And not all potentimeters are variable resistors.

A pot is a three leg component, anything with two is a variable resistor.

I wouldn't be able to ridicule him for falling victim to a con artist. Most people go into a business assuming the proprietor is qualified to do the job.
