My friend got burnt out on his factory job he had for 14 years and left on good terms to just take time off and lay back and go on a sabbatical for two years and travel a little and enjoy life. He is single, has no kids and lives in a house totally paid for; his parents left him the house when they died, he also got some insurance money when his mom passed away - not that much money to live off forever, just enough to well take two years off I guess lol. He has been talking alot about wanting to get a truck driving job because before he got his factory job he went to a local vo tech school and got his cdl, but the factory job came along and he took it without ever getting any truck driving experience or even applying for any truck driving jobs. He has kept his CDL up to date and current, has a perfect driving record, no felonies or misdemeanors, nothing like that. He wants to go to Roadmaster for training or maybe even one of the company sponsored training programs, but I told him he would never be able to get a truck driving job with his current employment record of taking two years off, and not working now as well. He says in the spring he is going to either go to Roadmaster or one of the company training programs, he talks about Roehl and Prime alot. Do you think he will be able to ever get a truck driving job after being unemployed by choice for two years? Why do the trucking companies act like you are a murderer or something and won't hire you just because you decided to take some time off from working? That doesn't seem right at all. So do you think he has a chance, or should he give up the idea of being a truck driver? Thanks.

My advice is to call the recruiters where he wants to go to work, tell them the truth, and see what they say. His biggest issue will likely be proving why he wasn't working. They will want to know he wasn't really in prison, or that he wasn't at home on a workmans comp issue, injured....things like that. If he really was just chilling, and traveling, he should be able to get in somewhere. Maybe not at his first choices, but some of these carriers will hire anyone with a pulse it seems. Get on with one of them, do a year or two, and then try to get back to the first choices. He should try to get a prehire before he spends the money on the refresher course. Or go thru a company program.

as long as he now criminal record that would dispute his 2yr vacation and does have a clean record he should be all right he's got the 14yrs at the factory and anyone there will give a good reference i dont think it will be much of an issue.

I was also unemployed for some time before getting into trucking.
They require a work history, and documentation of the time unemployed - and the documentation can include written statements from friends and family that you were unemployed during a certain period. I believe they also have to be notarized by a notary public.

It is not a problem if the correct documents are submitted.
