I have type 2 diabetes. I went in to renew my physical today. My BP was below 140/90, and I passed everything else. However, the dr. would only give me a one year certificate. When I questioned him on it he said that it was Concentra Medical policy that anyone with diabetes only gets one year.
I fit within all parameters set forth by dot under 49 cfr 391.41-49, but they wouldn't budge. I don't really appreciate them making up their own rules, and I'd like to know what I can do to fight this crap.
(b)(3) Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus currently requiring insulin for control;
I have type 2 and I don't need insulin.
(b)(6) Has no current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with his/her ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely
My bp is below 140/90.

I have type 2 as well. But I do not take Concentra. I take Glimpride once a day and watch what I eat. My BP runs around 120/70 or close to it. My doctor gave me a 2 year the last time I re-new'd.
BTW, I thought Concentra was a epilepsy (sp?) medicine????? -
Concenta is the name of the facility doing to physical....... -
Most only get one year now with Type 2. You probably also cannot cross into Canada. I know truckers here with Type 2 cannot cross into the USA.
It's annoying but at least it's permissable and you still have a CDL

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.... My goof.. My wife takes Concerta. (If I spelled it right) So that is what threw me the curve..... -
Well if you are insulin dependant you can't drive commercially here. But if it is controlled by diet and oral medicine you are OK.
Like I posted, my Doctor did my medical for 2 years the last time. Told me as long as I continue to keep all my blood levels in check, he will continue to do the same. (He has my blood work done every 3 months) -
ya'll need to check with FMCSA....there is now an exemption for insulin taking diabetics..
-
I'm not on insulin. I use pills and diet to maintain my sugar levels. My BP is below 140/90. My family dr. will give me a two year certificate. However, the company I am trying to get hired by dictated that I go to Concentra Medical Center. It is their in-house policy to only give 1 year certification to anyone that has diabetes...which is contrary to the guidelines/requirements of FMCSA.
-
I think any company can set their own guidelines as long as it does not violate FMCSA policy.. i've heard some companys will not hire diabetics type 1 or 2...Too many changes in the last few years for such backward thinking, medicene and treatment have come along way..

Yup, but I believe you CAN drive in Canada if you are insulin dependent but I'm not sure about that.
