The most ignored beneficial nutrients in the human diet are Omega three fatty acids, mainly found in fatty fish, grass fed dairy and walnuts. Combined with vitamin D, omega threes are showing reductions in heart problems, auto-immune diseases and cancer by more than 50%.
In hunter gatherer diets, the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3’s is about 1 to 1. In the modern diet it’s about 20 to 1. Correcting our diet’s fat profile and reducing carbs will significantly reduce your risk of the four of the most costly medical conditions: diabetes, auto-immune diseases, heart and vascular diseases, and cancer.

If I had to venture a guess, I’d say it’s the same as that among passenger automobiles.

It seems that the variable nature of type II diabetes is the issue; you need to be able to accurately adjust the amount of insulin you need depending on your recent food intake. Whereas type I diabetes is not food intake dependent, your insulin dose rarely varies. Many people with type II (especially those who have recently started taking insulin) make mistakes, either over-estimating or under-estimating the dosage. There are these new meters which can give you almost instantaneous true blood sugar readings, but they are expensive.

Even if you're a diabetic, your body still needs sugars for cell regeneration, either by eating starches that your body converts to sugar, or by eating sugar itself in fruits or from other sources. What my wife and I have learned since she was diagnosed with Type 1 is that you need to offset any carb or sugar intake with either fats or fibers to slow down the rate at which your body processes the sugar and causes glucose to rise in your bloodstream. Much of the time this can be most effective by simply eating the fiber or high fat food first, then eating the starch or sugary foods last, like dessert. My wife eats 2 eggs and 2 strips of bacon every morning and sometime also a slice of toast with regular jam. The fats in the bacon and eggs slows the sugar absorption down and usually keeps her glucose from spiking. I also make her home made ice cream with whole whipping cream, fresh peaches and monk fruit sweetener which doesn't affect her blood glucose. Type II diabetics would benefit greatly from the carnivore diet to get the bulk of the weight off, then switching to the keto diet to keep it off. Soda pop and starches are the main reason most truckers are overweight, myself included.
