Sounds like they need to go out of business

    Swift is not so bad.
The pay will increase many times in his first year, and he will get more than 1100 miles per week.
It all depends on how hard he wants to run, and how often he needs to get home.

Don't look so much at the starting .25 pay, because it gets better rather quickly. Look more at the fact that Swift is the largest trucking company in the country, and as such has the most loads along the most routes.
We are currently in the slowest period for trucking, yet I have not been left sitting for a single day.

I've been here over 3 years, and I'm based in SoCal - Otay Mesa (San Diego) terminal. And yet, I never get near the place. I've seen my DM 2 times, in all this time.
I run mainly the eastern 2/3 of the country because my home times are usually in Denver or MN, sometimes in the Sacramento, CA area.
But once he is back on the road from home time, it is the will of the Freight God's as to where he will go and how many miles he will get in any given week.

Don't let the bad stories you've heard about Swift get to you. All big companies have bad stories and naysayers.
The bigger the company, the more stories you will hear.
The more trucks on the road, the more accidents you will see reported.
    It's a numbers game.

When I started my mentor had been with Swift for 6 years, and he is still with Swift today. Many have been here twice that long.
People don't stay that long with a company if the company is really that bad.

He has to start somewhere, after all.
Working, even at Swift, is better than not working at all.
If he doesn't like it here he can get a year in and move to another company with ease, if he keeps his DAC clean.

I made 50k my first full year with swift. Just saying. Starting pay doesn't really mean a whole lot. Some companies start higher and the raises come slower. And the other way around. Now with that said I'd probably go with con way if you just want to pull dry vans.

I've averaged about $500 take home for the first 6 months OTR solo with Swift, now switching to a dedicated team account and looks like that will increase to about $700 per week. So first full year will be around $40K gross, averaging everything out. As Moosetek noted the raises come along nicely, there are quarterly bonuses, and the miles are good if you are willing to run.

Prime also sounds like a good option with higher starting pay. Good luck to both you and your husband.

Schneider is only hiring teams? I was hired in December as a new driver (went through their 3 week training program) and I am running as a solo driver.

I'm betting this depends on where you are trying to hire on with Schneider.

Or when. The answer in September/October (right before holiday rush) is often different than January/February (slow season) -- especially for those in the outskirts of hiring areas.

Get out and go see some of these companies. You might get a different answer when they see you in person. I know I wouldn't settle on just a phone call.

Good advice. Also, just because someone did not call you back, does not mean that you can't call them again. Have you checked Craigslist? Lots of jobs for both Sacramento and Redding areas but some of them are probably way worse than Swift. Where your located might be a little isolated but it never hurts to knock on some doors.

    GasHauler Thanks this.
